friendbot2000 posted:cops blow up a innocent families house in pursuit of a suspect. family receives nothing in compensation I know this thread is all knee-jerk ACAB but the victims are not actually the owners of the property so they just lost use of the home, they hopefully had rental insurance which likely covered the monetary losses (implied by the $5k going towards a deductible) and just need to find a new place to live. The police wildly overreacted but surprisingly didn't end up killing any people or dogs, so honestly this is probably the best case outcome given how militarized the police have become (lol 20mm shells and tanks?). The real travesty would be insurance not covering this, since you could wrap back around to ACAB and call the police terrorists and this being an act of terrorism, and insurance policies do not cover that.

skylined! posted:I suggest reading the article Ok quote:any large expenses Lech incurred are because he chose to do more than necessary, and chose to “repour the foundation that wasn’t damaged, and [build] a bigger better house where the old one stood.” Lech insisted starting from scratch was necessary. So they're trying to use insurance money to rebuild their house bigger, neglected to actually get the correct insurance to cover contents of their home, and somehow this is the city's fault? Do people sue God when a tornado comes through and they didn't buy the right insurance? Captain Invictus posted:yeah they should just suck it up that cops and judges decided everything they owned was worth destroying over two shirts and a belt The sad thing is that apparently there is lots of precedent case law that supports the judge's ruling. That is the real crazy part about all of this. Imagine thinking that the 5th Amendment says it's okay for the government to nuke your house from orbit because a petty thief commandeered your kitchen. Just imagine.

The amount of victim-blaming in your post is staggering. A person should not have to get insurance for the possibility that their home will be exploded by the police.

BigBallChunkyTime posted:Would Trump's Senate trial be public? We've got exactly two precedents to look back on and only one since broadcast journalism existed. So first, there's nothing stopping the senate from doing this in a closed session if they really, really want to. They'll have to change a few rules, but that's trivial when they'll have to establish the rules for their trial anyway. It's a safe bet that it'll be on television. It's too significant of event for republicans not to want to use it for grandstanding. It's just if they wanted to keep people out, they could.

It's not like you buy insurance specifically for when the cops come and blow up your house, it covers you for everything with a few exceptions. If the dude had rental insurance it would have covered the contents of his home either way. Again, I'm not defending the police actions, they overreacted, but the dude was armed, and the kid was not in the house.
