Like, what does the comms director for the Patriots make compared to any of the players on the team that neither of us can remember the names of offhand?

A practice squad player in the NFL makes 136,000 in a full year, which is already a signficant hurdle that a lot of employees won't meet. But of course some do: the GM, President, head coach, various VPs, coordinators, managers of each department, etc. I would think the Patriots comms director would make more than that.

With the XFL, it’s also just a matter of who has leverage. For the players, they’re a bunch of dudes who can’t even stick on a practice squad. So this is basically their only “hope” of playing pro football. There’s nowhere else for them to go and no union so take the poo poo pay or else (). Whereas for the business and logistics side of things, they’re competing against every business on earth for talent. They’re probably hoping to get suckers who will work for much less because they want to be in football specifically (see the video game industry for example) but it’s not a given that the pay for non-players will also be trash. I thought the AAF was paying semi decently for software engineers on their dumb gambling app?

I made 21k working as a the lowest rank manager of a goddamn movie theater. XFL would have to spice the pot up with free popcorn to match that.

They just got two huge TV contracts plus whatever the twice-annual Saudi shows bring in, plus whatever extra NXT brings in because that wasn't part of their original plan anyway. The stock price is whatever it is, whatever he's spending on the XFL is money he could literally set on fire and not miss. He's not going broke anytime soon.

The money is gonna keep coming in for at least five years from the FOX and USA deals and like eight more years for the KSA deal, but if every single number except guaranteed money keeps dropping every quarter, it's gonna bite them sooner or later.

That AFL folded in 2009. They got away from their system of going to minor league towns, staying for 2-3 seasons until the novelty wore off, and then moving the team to another town. They were actually so successful in the early to mid 00s that they started a minor league, AF2. The AF2 was really successful doing the same system the AFL originally did, staying in towns for a few years and then moving. The AFL folded because they started chasing bigger media markets to get better TV deals. After cancelling the 09 season, AF2 (which survived and held an 09 season) bought the rights to the AFL name out of bankruptcy and became the new AFL. But they eventually did the same thing, giving up a lot of their smaller markets and chasing bigger media markets until there was nothing left. Both AFL's are a perfect example of an organization that just can't be happy where they are. Gotta chase bigger and bigger money, even if it costs money in the long term.
