I wonder how rampant paying critics for good reviews is in the video games industry. It's certainly very prominent in video game streamer reviews.

There has been a feature about from... I want to say an Amiga magazine? Which detailed how publishers try to coax a good review, and how for example, if the review starts with the writer showing off about their trip to the publisher's state (or country) and dinners it would imply a lot etc

I can't for the life of me find it now however :negative:

Only tangentially related, but drat that's a blast from the past. My dad had most of the run of Amiga Power and I read them a million times growing up. I'm sad to this day that he just pitched them all a decade or so ago without even asking (to say nothing of the still-working A1000 they went with :arghfist::sigh:)

90s Pro Tier Mags for each system

Amiga Power
PC Zone
Super Play (SNES)

Did the ST have anything worthwhile? I think I used to read ST Format, but like PC Format it was just plain rather than essential. I read C&VG over Mean Machines which was also probably the wrong choice. GamesMaster was tolerable just because of Dom Diamond being an rear end.

Were there any actually good American mags? I remember reading a few like EGM from time to time, but none were as good as the UK ones. I think I liked them more for the adverts.

A totally different forum but I remember when Penny Arcade's forum had little subforum competitions, so the discussion forum would be a team, the art forum another, and they'd compete with General and Gaming in little games, like the Draw a Horse thread where each subforum had a separate one. Each one would start with the same single line made by the host, and everyone would add a single line or detail to complete the picture of a horse. Of course they devolved into chaos fairly quickly and had some bizarre horses. So many dicks drawn in jest...

He got death threats for months, people sent baby powder in envelopes to the Gamespot offices and Nintendo wanted him fired. The Kane and Lynch review was just the cherry on top.

If you don’t have at least one probate or ban on your rap sheet for ‘poo poo posting’ in GBS then you are truly a summer child.

That being said this forum is way more progressive and less malignant than it ever was and this is good.

I will take poo poo posting with some humanity and progressive thinking over incels, weaboos, reading the word ‘human being’, and proper punctuation and content posts any day.

I'm not a toy collector or even enthusiast but I follow the Toy Galaxy youtube channel (because we're about the same age and he does videos on old toy lines from when I was a kid constantly sparking weird deja vu and nostalgia) and he seems like a chill dude, but he's also handsome and personable. Anyway the sense I get from him is that most "normal" adult toy collectors buy expensive limited edition and subscription only stuff and don't really spend a lot of time down at the toy aisle in Wal Mart. But again i don't watch his collection videos just his old toy line ones so I'm not an expert.

I'm more interested in the business and licensing side of things as a curiosity but it's also cool to suddenly remember that holy poo poo, I had that toy or I watched that show, I completely forgot.

Also, your primary ad buyers for a gaming website is going to be game companies. They don't have to pay for good reviews specifically when they're funding your whole life. Think sugar daddy, not hooker/john.

And gamergate was bullshit because (amongst many other things) anybody actually surprised by this was probably literally 12.
