Not UK politics but it's quite funny: https://forward.com/news/world/434041/afghanistan-jews-taliban/ quote:Meet Zabulon Simentov, 66, who is believed to be the last remaining Jew in Afghanistan. Emran Feroz recently profiled Simentov for Foreign Policy and uncovered some incredible stories about the feisty Afghan — including that the Taliban once imprisoned him for arguing with a fellow Jew, then kicked him out because the constant bickering became too annoying. You reach down, you tax the student 5p for a plastic bag and then implement a massive rise in tuition fees. The student floats on their back, their belly baking in the hot sun, taking an unpaid internship to try and get experience so they can start paying off their tuition debts, but they can’t, not without your help. But you’re not helping. Why is that?

Bardeh posted:https://twitter.com/britainelects/status/1190048241703964672 Comparing 2017 with 2019 results: In 2017 Labour snapped up 50%, but achieved only 18.3% this year. The tories consistently gained only 40% of the vote in this area across both elections. It could be possible, then, that the loss is entirely down to a slicing up of the Labour vote as the Tory vote holds steady. Helping hold that vote steady, though, was the local constituency's MP Sajid Javid who helped the Conservative candidate, Kyle Daisley, with a few appearances. Any traces of a 2019 campaign by Labour's Bren Henderson were difficult to find on the internet. The local CLP were seen backing her on their twitter accounts, but the only thing I could find that showed any statement by her was an article in the local newspaper which seems to have been taken from her campaign page on the Labour website. There she spoke mainly of how long she had lived in the area and her previous jobs. One thing to note is that said newspaper article lists none of her specific policies which feature at the end of her Labour website campaign page. What I haven't been able to find is exactly how the previous Labour councillor's presence in the 2017 election compares with that of Bren Henderson, but it is worth noting that his move to Canada is the cause of the by election in the first place. Rachel Jenkins, the independent standing at the 2019 by election, was a new face to this ward. As a former councilor she's the only candidate who could boast previous political experience. Her campaign focused on traffic issues and "not supporting new development in the area" until certain conditions are met. Her appealing experience and NIMBYism won her 18.7% of the vote, putting her a hair ahead of Labour. Josh Robinson, the Lib Dem offering, also spoke about traffic concerns and parking issues, but was the only candidate to talk about funding for local schools, which seems to be an issue in the area as highlighted by a local school's 2018 "floss for funding" campaign. If I had to guess as to what happened here, it's that the Labour candidate didn't get the message across, allowing the big red voter share to go to the NIMBY's and the flossers. What's interesting is that no one talks about the bins, and that could well have been Labour's downfall. Azza Bamboo fucked around with this message at 02:11 on Nov 2, 2019 |
