This is about the LA governor's race, maybe? But it's small and weird and I didn't know where else to put it. Some guy calling himself Hank Setup says he's running for governor of Louisiana, and I can't figure out the grift or the gag. I'd chalk it up to some rando shitposting on Facebook, especially given how bizarre his single video is - he comes off as a dollar-store Mike Gravel in style, if not in substance - except that apparently he's got yard signs:

Mulvaney already tried the "so what" defense. Look what happened to him.

Aside from damage to institutions and norms (which is admittedly bad), I'm not sure why we think these arguments will be any more exonerating in the minds of the American people than the other spaghetti they've been throwing at the wall for the past month or so.

e: Plus, the "not corrupt quid pro quo" argument seems like it's easily countered by pointing to the extortion of freezing military aid, but maybe I'm missing something?

I'm fully convinced that whether Trump goes out via impeachment or losing in 2020, we're going to see violence from the Cliven Bundy types and the Nazis. Trump will encourage it as well. The question to me is if it becomes a fringe thing (five percent) or more mainstream. I fear the latter

Five percent of the US is sixteen million people. That would be a little more than fringe.

Any prediction of Trump supporter action that does not account for their deep seated cowardice rings hollow in my mind. There will be some that do poo poo, but if anyone is legitimately predicting an armed rebellion or mass action of consequence, I'm sorry you think so highly of them.

Yeah, I don't see mass insurrection. For much the same reason I don't see a general strike. People are both tired, poor, and relatively comfortable. Can't miss a paycheck, but not so hosed that they don't have quite a bit to lose.

Maybe a slight uptick in crowd/protest shootings, but I suspect the level of politically motivated stochastic terrorism would be hard to see against the background that we tolerate from the existing pool of disgruntled white shitbags, and cops.

He really is getting less coherent. It's truly astonishing to me how much of the national conversation just kind of skirts around the fact that our president can barely form thoughts, let alone express them coherently.

It’s what plays well with the chuds and trump is pissy. What I found more interesting is that a lot of the content is the same since the escalator but a lot more garbled and worm brains.

Okay fine, this is stupid, but I'll say it.

I don't think Trump would have gotten anywhere in his life if his name were not Trump.

I don't mean that in the sense of "having inherited his father's empire", I mean literally that his name is TRUMP. It just has a certain poetic ring to it in the ears of Americans; it tells a story, conjures up an image. A happy-go-lucky undefeated gambler. A playboy in a casino holding up an ace of spades. The temporarily embarrassed, but finally vindicated, millionaire.

I think if his name were Callahan or Baxter or Holbrook or something, his mythos would never have taken off. But his casinos, his towers, they all existed because people wanted to line up to give money to TRUMP—the idea of a golden boy with the name, literally, of a card that can't be beat.

Never mind that he's been beat all these times; his actual name is Trump. That's a story that just sells itself, factual events and history be damned. People buying into his image, whether investors or city officials, thought they were doing something good for their constituents and shareholders just by helping create the myth. That's why they kept helping paper over his failures, cleaning up after his messes, giving him break after break and letting him blame everything except himself and spin failure into just more myth in his favor.

I think if he had some other name he would have lost his rear end on his first few big projects and nobody would have ever heard from him again.

I'd rather distribute donations around the state.

I donated to a Commonwealth Attorney candidate in my old home county. It recently turned purple and it'd be nice for it to be straight blue.
