Am I the only one who finds the old man lynching Judd to be kind of off putting? However much of a piece of poo poo Judd might secretly be the brutality of how he was killed seems at odds with the ah shucks demeanor of the old man and the seemingly genuine affection Judd had for Angela.

Toxic Fart Syndrome posted:My guess is he took out the Cessna because, if they survived or were captured, they could name names or give up the plan... Yea, I can totally see the dude who gunned down the cop acting outside the plan, and his gently caress up caused Judd to use the TPD to take out the cell to cover his tracks. Or maybe he sacrificed the cell to bring the cops blood up so they're easier to direct for what he was planning? I cannot deny that seeing Racist Terrorists treated the way cops treat black people going about their days is nice, but the ease they get into it and the intensity, that's scary. And yea, Judd knew how to manipulate Angela for his own ends. As I said, he totally gaslighted her in the hospital by saying there was only one shooter at her house.

KoRMaK posted:we keep saying liberlism, but, is it actually liberlism? Or is is progressivism? captial L liberalism is about the free market getting to shape the world, not individual rights to people. the show seems to be more about individual liberties. I think the critique would be that no show with content requiring that kind of warning should be allowed on television, and yet it makes money so of course the market must be served. Another way of understanding those warnings is that entertainment in that world is much more horrific and over-the-top than our HBO titty and dragons programs, rather than that there’s an excessive nanny state.

They already knew this group was violent, just talking up and knocking on the door was not going to work. Plus they could have easily destroyed it before the Kav could respond with the Owl Ship. They didn't start deadly force until after coming under fire from the .50 cal. They were prepared but their lethal force was in reaction. That entire scene was a recreation/dramatisation of events from a TV show tho.

I took it as he's trying to recreate known stuff from scratch, and he's having his servants do the lab work. And they hosed it up. And so it's another heap onto the fire of disappointment that he has towards his servants. Yea I extrapolated a bit

I'm partial to the idea that Ozymandias stepped into his own intrinsic field in an effort to follow Dr. Manhattan, slipped into a nether-realm, but is unable reassemble himself because of ego and vanity.

I, too, love that idea. But it also reminds me a lot of the insane, way-off-base theories that people came up with for Lost.

I mean I definitely felt like what happened to Judd was uncomfortably brutal and tough to see given the time we’d spent with him, but were we supposed to react differently? I don’t think the intent was for anybody to go “gently caress yeah” in that moment, it’s horrifying for both the viewer and the character, regardless of what we might suspect. I always get super sad at the Comedian’s death in Watchmen too, not because he wasn’t a piece of poo poo, but because there’s something inherently sad and helpless about such a tough old secretly sentimental son of a bitch getting beaten that thoroughly and killed that violently. It’s a normal reaction imo

There's a very conspicuous fat man and little boy on the pier the day Manhattan was created, get it?? Anyways, maybe the play is a red herring and the cloning itself is the pertinent plot thread. Veidt trying to make duplicates so he can perpetually engineer human history from the shadows.

He's probably trying to get one of his weird clones to the point they're able to perfectly replicate things from scratch so if he does disintegrate them they can pull themselves back together. He had one of them fix that watch, he's having them memorize and go through the motions for that play, stuff like that. It's just that these clones are a bit off and would end up making Bizarro instead of Dr Manhattan.

The main thing I've picked up on my Watchmen re-read is how loving incredible Dave Gibbons' art is. It's not particularly showy but goddamn there is some mindblowingly solid visual storytelling going on in that 9-panel grid.

'Race riot' is definitely an inaccurate euphemism for how these violent chapters went down. This book really does a great job of detailing how WW1 and WW2 gave black Americans the tools needed to start fighting back against the oppression they experienced. White Americans were deadly afraid of armed black Americans and the racial violence throughout 20th century demonstrated how this fear manifested itself. It's notable that the earliest form of gun control in America was specifically designed to keep guns out of the hands of people of African descent.
