I think the whole "prison on Mars" interpretation seems stronger when you consider Veidts reaction to the failure of the latest version of his suit. The guy goes nuts and stomps a frozen man into pieces. You couldn't do that unless the dude was pretty much frozen solid I wouldn't think.

That guy who tweets in ALL CAPS is definitely a Watchmen expert since there definitely is not any part of the book where Laurie’s mom has complex feelings for a man who is very bad for her whom she has known for a really long time and had a very complicated abusive relationship with. Also one of the themes in the book is definitely not Sally Jupiter trying to turn Laurie into another version of her but Laurie rebels and then oops does it anyway. Symmetry and repetition- NOT IN MY WATCHMEN BUSTER.

I think the show does a pretty ok job of not relying on preexisting knowledge of the book. There’s just weird poo poo that you can expect to have explained later, but you know that Laurie used to be a hero, hates Veidt, has a husband/boyfriend who’s in prison, and used to date/be married to Dr Manhattan, who’s some kind of blue naked supergod who lives on Mars. Stuff like the police having an owl ship wouldn’t make sense immediately, but it’s obviously dumb superhero poo poo not out of place among costumes.

There were segments with no music or anything that seemed awkward as hell from hbgo.com at least. The scenes with Laurie and Senator McHuckleberry seemed like the most obvious. shoutout to the Manhattan dildo / teledildonics possibly? At first I thought she had dementia when she couldn't finish the joke. I was about to get sad. Thankfully it was just strategic editing. Not going to lie, from the previews before the show even started, I thought we were going to see Night Owl get murdered. But it's cool bc it was just some chump in a flying squirrel outfit or w/e. lol @ that dickhead from those stupid NCIS shows being the Walter Skinner of the Watchmen universe. I like Laurie. She's a loving rear end in a top hat and doesn't give a gently caress, just like the comics. Very different angle though considering she despises the masks.

I disagree with the arguments here that Veidt is trapped on Mars, for a pretty simple reason. The skull and bones flag Veidt gallops by is likely from the Black Freighter film set - that island in an unknown location. Remember, that's where Veidt had Max Shea and others create the "alien" before Veidt killed them all. It seems like a reasonable place to continue his experiments. I'm not sure why he's not chilling out in his Antarctic summer getaway instead. I'm not quite sure what Veidt is up to, but it likely involves meeting Dr. Manhattan on Mars with these clones he's made. Apparently he wants them to be capable of living naturally on Mars.

I’m not sure I buy Mars as where Veidt is- he could just as easily be somewhere remote. I’m definitely in the camp that he’s imprisoned himself as a game to try and work out a ploy to do... something. That seems like the most reasonable thing for a horribly insane guy to do. Mars, Antarctica, or the Earth’s upper atmosphere could probably make a popsicle of a man. The business of the repeating image of the manor, I dunno, maybe something about him being a psychic and making a psychic echo that Sister Night’s (psychic) kid is picking up on?

I really hope Manhattan's not involved in whatever's going on with Veidt. I thought his attitude towards him was perfectly summarised by: "I've walked across the sun. I've seen events so tiny and so fast they hardly can be said to have occurred at all, but you...You are a man. And this world's smartest man means no more to me than its smartest termite."

On that token, I am also weirded out that Dr. Manhattan apparently just went back to Mars, when he outright said he was leaving the galaxy in the comic. Makes me think it's all just a fabrication.
|
# ? Nov 5, 2019 12:05 |

Fully agreed. I just can't figure out a set of events that would lead to that. I still far prefer Veidt attempting to build his body after an intrinsic field blast. In another discussion I saw virtual reality prison which is boring. I'd also be into Dr. Manhattan on Mars being a fake planted by the government to give people hope—after all, why stick so near Earth if you don't give a hoot for mankind? So the maybe... Dan and Veidt are on Mars in crazy space prison but Manhattan hosed off to another galaxy immediately? I mean, that doesn't make sense either but it'd be neat.

Keep in mind, if Dr. Manhattan really is involved they very well may not be clones. He said he was going to go create some life, so these weirdos could be his attempts at creating human beings but without those pesky "emotions" that Manhattan doesn't fully understand. A new set of Adams and Eves that for some reason Manhattan has Veidt babysitting.

This is the only reason I think the VR prison thing might have some veracity. If Dan and Veidt are both in prison (for knowing too much about Veidt's plot and not becoming a government agent like Laurie) then we could be seeing Veidt push against the walls of his virtual prison. Even if it's not the most interesting explanation, it might tie those two pieces together. And yeah, I think that with the Russians being brought up casually as making their own intrinsic field generator, them making a Manhattan hoax on Mars makes sense. Also makes the Manhattan phonebooths sadder.
