He couldn't have been deaf to the Hager backlash or the general tone of WWE/AEW discussion and opinions these days. So like, I think we're being really generous if we just accept that he just "accidently" wandered into a Trump Jr interview. He probably didn't seek it out or anything but I couldn't possibly buy that he didn't know he was making a statement when he agreed to the interview/book promotion. He knew what he was saying. He either didn't care or DID care and agreed.

I would have advised Jericho against it for the record. I am not an American. But a lot of Wrestling fans are Republicans and AEW runs quite a lot in the South. Ignoring them especially as a young business is probably pretty foolish.

It’s not surprising considering the sheer volume of stuff he puts out. That’s the trade-off of not having very many people covering the breadth of stuff that he does - you end up with a mass of stuff with some errors, or certain things not getting coverage at all

But Wrestling or rasslin is more right-wing than left-wing on the level AEW is operating from my POV. Marching into 2020 AEW will have to juggle a lot and avoid a mind field. I'd err on escapism and light fun. I know Tony was mad about Jericho's post-All Out podcast as it revealed too much behind the curtain even by 2019 standards. But Tony didn't want to confront him given his status and the respect he has. There's a lot of considerations and commercial waters AEW will have to navigate one year or so in operation.

Jericho’s All Out podcast was great and that’s a backwards attitude. It’s a work. Everyone knows it’s a work. We all know the orgasms are fake, we still watch porn. People can see behind the curtain and still enjoy the product. His Donald jr podcast however is bad. What a dumb idea.

I also really enjoyed Jericho’s post-All Out podcast, I wish there was more content like that. Honestly, it really shouldn’t be that hard for a wrestling promotion to not wander into Presidential politics, but here we are, I guess.

WWE fans might have a more conservative bent because they're majority over 50 but that's going to be balanced out by how well wrestling does with POC, a demographic that can be conservative but doesn't vote Republican. And obviously a demographic that has no support for Trump. AEW obviously has a younger fan base. I really wouldn't expect their fans to lean hard right at all. Perhaps conservative but not as conservative as Trump who's a divisive figure even on the right. I go to the bar every Sunday for Seahawks games. People in Seattle don't like Trump, on the whole. Not the way you read about, though. We're not as liberal as you'd think. But The South it isn't, so it's not cool to like him here. And I live in a white-rear end neighborhood. The way people at the bar talk about politics, it's exactly how they talk about the Hawks game. They don't like that their team is losing, but they all have jobs and money and nobody's throwing them in camps or taking their rights away, so they don't think about it until it comes up and then they say Thing Bad, which is more than I expect from most people, and I'm glad they do, because that isn't nothing, and I think they'll vote. It's hard to make those people care beyond "this is bad and I'll vote next time, though." We all protested so much that first year, but that energy is gone from those people. They'll just wait until election night to see if their team wins next time. Bryan's in a bubble inside of another bubble. He, like 60% of us, knows this is bad. But that's it.

Marching into 2020 AEW will have to juggle a lot and avoid a mind field. I'd err on escapism and light fun. I’m just commenting on their existing marketing, rov. On social media AEW higher ups - Cody and Brandi especially, but also Tony, Omega and the Bucks - have made a BIG point about inclusiveness and diversity. “Wrestling is for everyone,” etc. They’ve made a very deliberate strategy of seeming like the good guys to the big bad WWE. I don’t believe Nyla got signed or pushed because she’s trans, but her presence in their marketing sends a really clear message. Likewise with Sonny Kiss. Regardless of its effectiveness (which I also disagree with you about, but that’s a different discussion), this is the strategy they’re employing. It’s anathema to MAGA types. They aren’t going to watch wrestling with trans people or gay characters who aren’t jokes. AEW can hire people like Hager and it not be that big a deal, but when their champion and biggest star goes and talks with Trump Junior about feminist snowflakes for two hours, that fucks their whole image. When someone was asking a few days ago as to why there have been so many recent wrestling podcasts, I was going to answer that I thought it was the fact that wrestling is so consumed by this demo, but I still really don't have a good cohesive argument as to why I think wrestling appeals more to left and why that leads to more wrestling podcasts than other more popular subjects, but I'm unable to really make any arguments that I'm very confident in or advance my thought beyond the general feeling that there is causation.

They’ve hired and pushed more openly LGBT people in 7 months than WWE has this millennium. I don’t ally myself with corporations, “there’s no ethical consumption etc etc”, but that alone is something from my perspective. I never, ever thought I’d see a genderqueer person in a nationally televised wrestling company before AEW, and that’s meant a lot more to me than I thought it would at first. But, again, I’m just talking about how they market themselves in the context of my discussion with Rovert.
