I don't know. Labour just sacked their candidate for losing her poo poo about Cherry being a terf. A new one hasn't been announced. But we can hope, and in any case it's the broader picture that matters, not one seat. Labour came third in 2017 with 26.8%. CON got 33.4% and SNP got 35.6%.

People do seem genuinely tired of negative campaigning and personality politics in general. I've said before the difference between the Trump and Clinton campaigns - and the Leave and Remain campaigns for that matter - is one side offered a clear, easy-to-understand vision of a better future, while the other only offered "Get a load of these arseholes". It doesn't matter that the vision was bollocks, it was *something* that people could grasp as a way out of their lovely situation.

That's an extremely generous way to phrase overt white supremacy. Trump didn't gain any of the low-income votes Clinton lost (taking population growth into account, he actually lost voters) - he made up the difference with economically secure but racially anxious middle-income white people. Looking at the Rust Belt results is really fascinating - both parties lost votes due to lack of enthusiasm and new voter ID laws, but the Democrats lost more (for reasons that should be obvious if you know anything about American voter ID laws), and Clinton also lost a significant amount of votes to... Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party candidate (and I don't know what the gently caress that says about American voters).

Forgive me for constantly bringing this up, but I do get annoyed when people talk about Trump's appeals to the working class like anyone noticed or cared about them.

This manifests as ethno-nationalist garbage a lot of the time but the debate over "what is British culture?" seems like a valid question and I'm not sure either of the main parties really do a good job in answering it. The Tories have a ton of reactionary crap about Empire and Glorious Brittane, but current Labour doesn't seem to have much of a cultural focus and the Blairites had the same bland liberal globalism in mind as Hillary 2016.

What would a socialist vision of British culture look like? How can you reconcile a concern with national culture with an international, outward-looking approach? These seem like important questions for dealing with the rise of rootlessness and feelings of displacement which are caused by capitalism and lead to fascist tendencies, but need a cultural as well as an economic solution.

I think to be completely honest the idea of a national culture is inherently flawed, because it's necessarily exclusionary and doesn't handle cases like im/emigration or in the UK's case, the wild variance within the country. I probably have more in common with someone in the US rust belt than I do with someone in, like, Bristol.

However, I also think that left politics can entirely substitute for whatever you need your national culture for. Because it's got a really strong history behind it, and that history far more than most national histories, is repeated in the modern day. We fight for the same reasons as people a hundred or two hundred years ago did, we have, ultimately, the same needs and probably a very similar goal. If you want to be part of something bigger than yourself and something with a history to it, go left wing, it's great. And also it's actually good unlike nationalism.

If there was a third party I would expect to do well in Alty this time it would be the greens seeing as they hold all 3 seats in the Alrincham ward.

Personally I think Tories are going to lose votes to the LDs and we're in with a shout of taking it.

Like you said, it's harder to speed up or slow down an AC induction motor, you either need a whole bunch of gears, or to increase or reduce the line frequency as you do same with the voltage, otherwise they tend to stall or catch fire. But once you can do that, it's very easy to do regen, if the motor's spinning faster than the line frequency, it acts as a generator, slower and it acts as a motor. Far nicer than anything to do with shunt wound DC motors. But Variable Frequency Drive requires big solid state stuff that only existed from the mid 90s on.

The first trains to do that on the underground were the '95 and '96 spec, which entered service on the Northern and Jubilee lines 1997-2000, but even they didn't use regen, only rheostatic brakes. Later build trains for Circle, District, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith lines went back to using brushed DC motors for reasons I do not know. (Probably :10bux:)

Depending on which line you're on, they probably sound like they have gears because they do. The AC ones have a gearbox as well as a VFD, the DC ones are I think just coupled to the axle.

I know all this, I was making a joke about VFD also meaning vacuum fluorescent display...

And yes, they have gearboxes to keep the motors at an rpm they're happy with, but it's not a variable drive like you have in a car - the ancient thyristors on the 1996 stock are particularly loud, so the harmonics of them switching sounds like they're going up through the gears:

Yeah, I think the internet especially has broken this form of nationalism, even as it does allow alt-right groups to form and nazis to post nazi poo poo, because it really hammers home that someone with similar hobbies or life experiences or struggles can exist in many places, and you can effectively build an identity around this (even if some of them are lovely). Before then it'd be either more one-way, like "this civil rights leader in this other country on the TV is saying the same things I'm thinking" or far slower like penpals.
