After something like seven years of trying I finally got to fill a deer tag today, the last day of the rifle season. Got a 7x3 buck with a really clean shot that saw it drop to the ground pretty much instantly.

Here's a spoilered link so people who don't want to see it don't have to.

Nice buck.

Spent the day verifying the crib we bought has all the parts needed and buying some replacement bolts for the ones that were missing.
Mentioned it before, but yeah, we pregnant. Due early May.

Because apparently for them building an entirely new truck out of a couple old ones is easier than passing another driver's test.

probably cheaper too.

gently caress these bushfires. Friends bought a small property 2 months ago and we are 80% sure it's burnt to the ground. Cannot access the area, and seeing power is cut we can't get anything from the security cameras now the UPS is drained. They are on holiday so couldn't even grab poo poo. Their parents luckily had a spare set of keys so their cars are safe at my property now. Dogs are ok, god speed to the chooks!

I have a drone, but roads closed far before their property so no range with my silly home built unit. I'm a bit worries because the sentinal fire map shows 3 fires in last 24 hours in a triangle around them. Also a photo of a helicopter on the access road to their place came up on FB. That at least means the fireys are actively in their area so thats good.

I'm a few hundred KM away and still getting the smoke haze.

I can't even be bothered to get the BE license so I can actually get project cars home. Even if it's easy I still have to do a theory test and pass a driving test with a trailer which a bit of a hassle.

Uhhh.... there's active low flying aircraft around fire zones and is restricted airspace as a result. Heavy fines and a bunch of pissed off fire fighters will be the result.

Believe me, they were NOT happy with that drone operator. At community meetings (that was the year my place was affected) they made it 100% clear keep drones out of the skies even after fires have moved on.

Could just do utökad B, when you have a B license already you just have to do the practical test.

Yeah but doesn't seem to be enough for many of the trailer+car combos to get up in the loads needed for trailering a car. Probably for the best or I'd be bringing home tons of projects that would take way too much time to finish anyway. :P

Yeah, same deal here in the states. They have to ground aircraft when they spot a drone and that means no retardant / water drops.

Doesn't stop morons from doing it.

My entire life I've been buying and working on VW's. When someone in my family needs my help looking for a car, we look for a VW. It becomes a negative feedback loop - you buy what you know how to work on, and you learn how to work on what you buy. Besides a Honda motorcycle, I haven't owned anything else, so owning something American (much less a pickup truck) is absolutely out of character for me.

As much as I hate to admit it this is partly why I'm obsessed with Volvo. The good news is that with the internet in its current state, there is nothing you can't learn about a different car model in about an hour of research. It was really hard for me to shift generations on Volvos the first time I did it, for example my first foray in to FWD was 15 years after they introduced their first FWD model. Now I realize that there's just tips and tricks, and all you really need to do is the initial research on which things to avoid, certain model years or engines, etc. Then you just dive in after watching a youtube video or two.

On another note, I'm going through the financial aid process for my daughter's college. What a nightmare. All you guys with kids, remember to help your kids learn to organize and store their paperwork when they get their first job. And remember to grab their W-2s even if they aren't filing taxes. My daughter had a summer job, last year, and now 14 months later she realizes she didn't ever receive or download her W-2. She only made a few hundred bucks, so she didn't file taxes, but the colleges she's applying to require income info of any kind. So we have to go figure out how to get a copy. Shouldn't be too hard, but the deadlines are looming.

VVV She does have all her pay stubs, the real issue is W-2s are allowed to be distributed digitally, which usually means the employer just has a note on your pay stub to create a login and go to their payroll site to get it yourself, and it's not there forever. Like if I go to my paycheck viewing website and click on W-2 it says it's not ready yet. Morons, I want to look at last year's.

Any running car is worth $1000—$1500, but I'd check the voltage the alternator is putting out as well before doing the starter. Might not be charging the battery as it runs.

True enough, I didn't have my multimeter on me at the time. The alternator light did go off once it was revved a bit; I'm not sure if the ECU was just pissed off about being push started or not, I know my Saturn would get bitchy when push started (it would kill throttle input and eventually stall if you didn't turn the key to start first, and the alternator light would often stay on after being push started, despite it being a solid 13.8v).

I'd (maybe) feel comfortable tackling the alternator on it for him, just not the starter. Not without ramps or a lift.

Just the movie or the series? I've actually never seen the movie but I really love the series. Jupiter Jazz part 2 is absolutely fantastic and one of my favorite episodes of anything ever. There's no way it could be matched or improved with live action. Guess since Big Cinema has run out of remakes it's now time to unnecessarily live action everything. There was no reason to mess with The Lion King (or anything similar) making it look live action, ugh.

I can tell you with a good deal of certainty why Disney is redoing all of its movies. Racism, sexism, and other touchy subjects in their old films are being erased so that everyone only knows the candy coated versions that they want people to see. Dumbo removed the crows, drinking, and animal cruelty. Lion King removed almost all of Rafiki and reworked the hyenas and Nala. Beauty and the Beast made Belle into a "strong female protagonist", despite already being a strong female protagonist, and so on and so forth

I want to give far out adaptations a chance, Starship Troopers is one of my favorite films ever, but I feel like no one who makes the big decisions in these modern adaptations understands what they're working with, and that's a big problem

Sadly no. If I was more liquid right now I'd be jumping on it. Money's all tied up in other projects. Two more, without room for them is out of the question. I drove 800 miles this weekend, and I've noticed my right knee really doesn't like driving but not being able to fully extend my leg. I have a boat of a car (LS460), but I'm tall and I can't fully extend my leg. I think the last car I sat in where I could fully extend my leg was a C4 Corvette, but I'm replacing my wife's car with a SUV soon and I think then I'll be able to have all the leg room I need. Anyone else have this issue and have it go away with a SUV (or car with more leg room)? I was planning a road trip next year, but it just wasn't as fun as I thought it'd be this weekend to do CA to AZ and back. I probably could have taken more breaks, we did the CA/AZ border to Los Angeles without stopping, and with plenty of traffic.

The last time I did that drive without feeling dire needs to stop to stretch, I was in a W210-generation E320 that was still new enough to not be falling the gently caress apart.

Seeing as I'm about twice as old as I was then, I'm not sure if the limiting factor is the car, or my joints. But being able to stop and get out and stretch whenever you feel like it (even if it is in loving Indio or Quartzsite) is part of why I prefer road trips unless the drive is well over eight hours.
