Best advice I was ever given?

"Ticker, you'll be a lot happier once you stop caring about the opinions of a culture that is beneath you."

I learned my worth, learned the places and people that matter.

Opened my eyes.
FF8 had nothing to do with Xenogears' demise, it was due to Squeenix's strict deadlines

Bards Tale IV even more things wrong:

There are glowing green runes throughout the main hubbish area of the game, with most being hidden. Theres no way youll miss their existenve, though, because every time you exit the building in the hunbish area you will see one of them the moment it finished loading. These runes match the same puzzle runes that have been used all game and as you unlock more of the starting area you can find more.

These runes mean absolutely nothing and have no bearing on anything.

On that note:

There is a missable achievement requiring you to beat the final boss with only a party of three characters instead of six. You can not switch your party at any point starting two dungeons before the final boss and despite there being no real reason you cant go back to the party select screen, it just doesn't let you. I made it all the way to the final boss assuming the game surely wouldnt be this petty only to find out, no, it is, so time to redo all of this with a new party.

Blaming FF8 for Xenogears is just an excuse to get mad at FF8 even more than internet nerds already do. Heck, if you wanna blame an FF, you'd wanna blame FF7. If Xenogears had actually been accepted as FF7, it would have gotten way more staff and more leeway. but of course, it would have also been an entirely different game. For one thing, it would have had a moogle getting crucified.

people imagine xenogears as "ff8 busted into the room with a gun and demanded they give it all their money" when it's just "we had half the game done but square expected games to release after a year and a half of development so when asked what i wanted to do i just had everyone sit in chairs and exposit the second half of the plot cause i liked that option better lol"

I gravitated towards the Greens, eventually even joining the party itself.

The Linke is a party I grudgingly accept exists, but I've learned enough about DDR-history I can't bring myself to trust a party that was once the SED, a party leading the corrupt state apparatus ...

Man, this reminds me of the time when I made a tiny RPG-Maker game and "balanced" it so every second encounter in the starting area would be impossible to survive until you got at least 2-3 levels

Though if I had made Bard's Tale IV, I'd put in many bad and dumb jokes about the game being very petty, so this poo poo wouldn't have surprised you. :v:

Still, I'm guessing the devs of BTIV meant stuff like this perfectly serious, because old games were like that and old is good

japanese and american members of the xenogears team had very different experiences with the ff8 team as it was happening cause to the japanese members of staff they'd give a noncommittal apology but for the american ones they'd just say "whatever" and this is the most stretched joke about ff8's localization differences i could ever possibly give

I didn't know that about the FF8 myth. That's one of those things I heard on the internet and seemed like something a massive corporation would do so I never questioned it.

But my point was that I realized my enjoyment of Xenogears is closely tied to the fact that its a mess. Which is odd because I have no patience for Xenosaga, which is considerably more of a catastrophe.

ImpAtom

Xenogears is a mess because they had a lot of ambitious ideas and lacked the capability to put it together but there's still a lot of enthusiasm behind what they do have. It makes it genuinely charming even if some parts of the game are objectively a disaster

Absolute truth

It's such a powerful, fascinating story. Grahf is a previous incarnation of the protagonist, he has the same memories and feelings as the protagonist. He loves the same woman and he knows how that woman he loves with all his being has been brutally killed time and time again. In his unstable state, after losing the love of his life, he is manipulated into attaining his birthright, the ultimate power he is destined to wield and save the world. But with the loss of his love fresh on his mind, the new power and memories overwhelm him. He sees that not only did he lose "his" Elly, he sees that he's lost her again and again and again for nearly 10,000 years. Mad with grief at the fate he and his love have been dealt, and imbued with unrivaled power, he goes mad and nearly destroys the world. His body is killed and only his lingering hatred and resentment live on as he remembers that the woman he loved with all his heart implored him to go on living without her. So he resolved to live until the very end - and if the end did not come, he would end the universe itself. He would put it out of its misery.

Throw in great design, great theme song, great robot - he's perfect, really.

Of the many cool things about that concert, the fact they got Joanne Hogg back to sing Small Two of Pieces was a huge surprise to me. I didn't dare hope that they would get back THE voice of Xenogears and Xenosaga but they did.

The Chrono Cross 20th anniversary concert is coming up soon, I can't wait for that.

It's just as plodding as the dungeon it's in so it's quite fitting. Sort of an acquired taste after you spend hours in there to the point you just want to avoid all the encounters and get on with it, especially if you hadn't been regularly visiting and clearing the place up till and after Shido.

Most of the dungeon themes are good, but on the other hand they play Tokyo Emergency all the time during the day so you almost never hear the actual daytime theme.

After Nocturne had like 4 different themes for normal battles, one of which has like 8 variations, it's always been weird that they stick you with one for an entire game.

It's so weird how long Xenogears waits to introduce Krelian, considering how hugely important he turns out to be. Imagine if FF7 didn't even mention Sephiroth until the end of disc 2.

I checked wikipedia briefly to see if there where any direct references to the other Xeno games in XBC that I forgot (I haven't revisited that game since the Wii), and was shocked to learn the original concept for Xenogears was a Chrono Trigger sequel. I still have trouble believing Chrono Cross is a direct sequel, much less a game with Jesus robots.

Then they took the Xenosaga approach where who was most important to the script changed randomly between episodes.

I've noticed this since my second run of CC but Masato Kato really wanted to make a hybrid Chrono/Xeno game. There are so many themes and ideas just straight lifted from Gears, like the villain being your possessed dad who also wants to take over your body. Not to mention the Xeno crew's love for plots within plots and nebulous manipulators doing nebulous things.

Xenogears did it all better, of course. But Chrono Cross makes up for it by having way better gameplay.

As for Krelian, I think his late introduction is indeed one of Gears' biggest flaws. I don't think he ever earned the respect of the fans the way Grah or Miang did and it's part of why the ending with him is so detested. Nobody actually feels sorry for him in any way.

Crowetron
Apr 29, 2009

I like Xenogear's combat system more than Chrono Cross's but I'm sure part of that comes from the spectacle of giant robots doing kung fu to fantasy monsters. I'd say Cross's greatest strength is being stunningly gorgeous. Easily the best looking Playstation 1 game.

And you just reminded me of Krelian's "redemption" at the end of Xeno. There were a few JRPGs from that era that tried and failed to make the villain sympathetic at the last minute. Legend of Dragoon did a terrible job of it, too.
