Did the deposed president appoint the judges that ruled against enforcing the term limits? Not trying to argue one way or the other yet because I know gently caress all about Bolivia, but on the surface it seems like it might be replacing a leftist bullshit dictator on the rise for a military-authoritarian one instead.

I mean hell, it's not like the decision in Bush v. Gore made the 2000 election any less hosed up. This feels like a situation where Morales flew too close to the sun. By fighting so hard to personally remain in power, in spite of both the constitution and the public referendum, he empowered and partially legitimized the opposition's claims he was becoming a dictator. And it sucks, because he did a lot of good for Bolivia, and much of the opposition against him clearly appears to be made up of assholes. Had Morales picked a successor and had them run in his stead, he could have likely continued working to lead Bolivia behind the scenes. Now, who knows what the gently caress is going to happen, other than "nothing good, probably."

JFC, people, it's a godsdamned coup by right wing authoritarians that deserves to be opposed, but I'd bet every single one of you would have passionately advocated that term limits are essential to good governance up until the point that you saw a loving tweet saying "hey guys, this guy's on our team and it was totally they popular will that he be in office for 12+ years." He had a decade to organize for and hand the office over to a successor that would have continued his work while upholding democratic norms, but he was apparently too loving vain to do it. Demand better from those who represent you. If your team's elected representative has nominally fought for causes you care about, they destroy everything by malfeasance, whether disregard for term limits, corruption, or sexual harassment, and if you just handwave it away you're going to be unpleasantly surprised when the rug is pulled out from under you. You can only serve a max as 10 years as president so if you serve 3 years of your predecessors term youre only elligible for one election campaign
