Remembering that was what made me think of it, actually. :v:

And I wasn’t thinking of another party split so much as them having to then hoof it the rest of the way through the Arctic... And whatever else lurks within it.

There are magic items that indicate north. They could be using one of those.

Jesus Christ Gygax

quote:

In order to provide a playtest environment in which to develop these rules, Gygax designed his own castle, "Castle Greyhawk", and prepared the first level of a dungeon that lay beneath it. Two of his children, Ernie and Elise, were the first players, and Ernie rolled up a wizard, Tenser.:99 During the evening, the children fought and destroyed the first monsters of the Greyhawk dungeon; Gygax variously recalled this as being some giant centipedes or a nest of scorpions. During the same session, Ernie and Elise also found the first treasure, a chest of 3,000 copper coins (which was too heavy to carry, much to the children's disappointment).

3000 pennies is heavy, but not impossible for two people, so it was even more bullshit.

Edit: Even assuming they weigh an absurd 10 grams per coin, that's still only 66 pounds.

Yeah so Gygax's kid was one of the very first character of all time. And he is a Wizard who also wants to be a fighter. Which led to him getting spells to make him fight good.
So the dichotomy of a Wizard who also has martial powers has always been around in this game.

Also I think his daughter played a druid or something. Even if she was playing a fighter of an Elf they still should have been able to take that treasure chest.
