I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

I think sometimes that post-apocalyptic fiction and dystopian fiction are prominent because it makes the real world as it is feel less bad. It has the implicit suggestion of what follows the fall of capitalism to be worse than now. A modern revamp of the Lacanian Real, which rather than being reality is a horror story to inspire acceptance of the current. For example, the Hobbesian idea of pre-history being nasty and brutish to make the current situation more acceptable.

The reality of the more anarchist organization of tribal society shows it's not true. I also think with the Cold War ending, Y2K/the year 2000, that Boomers, who grew up with that fear of nuclear annihilation are going "I was promised the world was going to end, and I'll drat well make sure!" The Freudian Death Drive writ large.

But then I remember Zizek is a transphobe and move on.

There's some people in my office that abstract data from Epic (electronic medical record software) into a database. They have this totally Orwellian software on their computers that keeps track of everything they're doing, and even records if they don't move their mouse every so often (presumably this is a sign of inactivity).

Also you can imagine reading people's medical records can be very depressing (these are all transplant patients).

That quote about being YT's mom

quote:

Y.T.'s mom pulls up the new memo, checks the time, and starts reading it. The estimated reading time is 15.62 minutes. Later, when Marietta does her end-of-day statistical roundup, sitting in her private office at 9:00 P.M., she will see the name of each employee and next to it, the amount of time spent reading this memo, and her reaction, based on the time spent, will go something like this:
Less than 10 mm. Time for an employee conference and possible attitude counseling.
10-14 min. Keep an eye on this employee; may be developing slipshod attittide.
14-15.61 mm. Employee is an efficient worker, may sometimes miss important details.
Exactly 15.62 mm. Smartass. Needs attitude counseling.
15.63-16 mm. Asswipe. Not to be trusted.
16-18 mm. Employee is a methodical worker, may sometimes get hung up on minor details.
More than 18 mm. Check the security videotape, see just what this employee was up to (e.g., possible unauthorized restroom break).

Y.T.'s mom decides to spend between fourteen and fifteen minutes reading the memo. It's better for younger workers to spend too long, to show that they're careful, not cocky. It's better for older workers to go a little fast, to show good management potential. She's pushing forty. She scans through the memo, hitting the Page Down button at reasonably regular intervals, occasionally paging back up to pretend to reread some earlier section. The computer is going to notice all this. It approves of rereading. It's a small thing, but over a decade or so this stuff really shows up on your work-habits summary.

real talk, the American people's response to school shootings basically cemented my greater psychological scope theory that MAD is bullshit, and at some point in the next decade a nuclear state is going to drop the bomb on a rival country's city, it won't cause the end of the world, and everyone is just going to grow to accept a new reality where every six to eight months a city just gets deleted somewhere on the planet because nobody is willing to actually stop it

I feel cyberpunk mostly missed the whole "the corporations are shells for offloading legal responsibility and the actual wealth is contained within dozens of small dynasties that actually are quite happy to not fight".

Also that YT's mom bit is laughable - as if you would ever get a human doing the evaluation when an automated system flags something.

Neuromancer (and the other Gibson books set in the Sprawl) are pretty explicit that all the wealth is concentrated in corporate zaibatsus who compete with each other on the open market and the occasional black ops operation - a plot in Count Zero involves a Blackwater-esque professional who takes contracts to poach staff who want to defect from one company to another - but never actually escalate into any sort of combat. The actual dynasties in his world start out big (Tessier-Ashpool is the main mover in Neuromancer) but end up dying to basically the same thing that always happens to inherited wealth, when someone gets a hold of it who's not as good as the main accumulator and then they get eaten by a corporation, etc.

also YT's mom works for the Federal government in the future, it seems reasonable that they'd have a law mandating that humans have to evaluate everything because it's half sinecure half CYA
