If anyone is wondering what the line of attack the establishment is going to use against free broadband it’s “by part nationalising BT it’s going to harm it’s share price, which will in turn affect pension funds invested in BT”

This broadband policy is an absolute bsnger, been browsing the comments and the most negative ones are basically "not the worst idea but I fear we have bigger problems we have to deal with". Even the magic money tree nonsense looks nearly absent, absolutely every fucker loves this.

LIf you read through the BEIS industrial strategy then in 2017 the civil service identified four grand challenges leading into 2030 that needed addressing. Ageing Population Clean Growth Data Economy and AI Mobility Labour are hitting all of these boxes with their announcements, so I’d not be surprised to read something about data rights and the relationship between government and individuals along an Estonian model?

Sure there are bigger issues, but internet is absolutely an essential today, everyone who's ever dealt with them hates Virgin Broadband and friends, and it's really hard to argue against without sounding like you just love lovely extractive companies and hate people having good things. Anyone under 70 (years of age and/or £1000s a year) is going to be for this.

I can't guarantee I have cd keys for all of them because some of the manuals have gone missing and I don't even know what DRM a lot of them used but obviously CD keys are defunct nowadays anyway cos every one's been cracked. Sounds like you've already arranged to give this to Rarity, but wondering if there's any old RPGs in there? Also, on the topic of old dos games, I'm trying to remember the name of a flight simulator; I never actually played it because it would crash after the intro video. I bought it as part of a collection in the late 90s It featured zeppelin launched fighters I think it was alternate reality, but it was not Crimson Skies The intro had some really manic violin music playing.

painted into a coroner posted:I love the apparent idea that building social housing is non-ideological. "Social housing" - i.e. housing built by the private sector with an arbitrary cap on rent based on local prices - is non-ideological and just common sense because it makes a profit. "Council housing", built by local authorities with rent set at a level determined by the actual ability of people to pay is completely ideological and worse than Hitler because there's no profit to be made for sensible, non-ideological landlords.

Britain's one-time lead in home computers - which led to our massive tech sector and particularly video games industry - is almost entirely thanks to massive direct public investment in microcomputer firms by the NEB and a national push for tech literacy among children through the schools system, led by noted pinko <checks notes> Margaret Thatcher. It's so glaring that the alleged sensible, non-ideological centrists are actually considerably more Tory than loving Thatcher.

This is part of the warning really: The reason the FT likes Corbyn is because they perceive his socialism to be a temporary inconvenience compared to brexit which they think would be hard to reverse. Also - whether they dare put it in such terms out loud or not - they recognise that Corbyn's fairly soft-left reforms are the only thing that will keep capitalism alive over the medium term. For all the screaming, they know that not letting the current pressure that's building up around the world out it's going to go bang in ways that make the first half of the 20th century look mild.

So BT started a massive effort - that spanned in six years - involving thousands of people to both digitise the network and to put fibre everywhere. The country had more fibre per capita than any other nation. I'm glad she's dead.

Bit mad to credit Thatcher for this. Mostly a BBC project, and when she actually had to acknowledge computers existed so she could brag to the japanese that we also can do a technology, she ignored that project entirely to wave a spectrum around. They seem to have lost interest in computers all just at the moment ARM showed up, which is the biggest lost opportunity since north sea oil.

The BBC project was part of a Thatcher policy, Acorn received massive finding direct from central Government for the BBC micro, and only existed because of NEB investment in Sinclair. Thatcher had been banging on about computers since her days as Education Secretary. Of course she reverted to type - possibly (almost definitely) under massive pressure from the Yanks, because the UK moving into the microprocessor market really seriously threatened Silicon Valley - but it's silly not to credit her for literally the only good thing she did in her entire career. (I don't credit her for soft-serve ice cream because it's an abomination)

Also features a pre-transition Sophie Wilson who they never actually name, presumably to avoid deadnaming her

Wonder how the "who's going to pay for it all Jermy?" crowd would react if Labour's spending was paid for in exactly the same way the banks were bailed out to the tune of £375 billion - by magicing it up out of literally nothing at the click of a mouse. Quantitative Easing didn't seem to cause any inflationary problems, after all, so that's one of the big arguments against printing money countered.
