If anyone is wondering what the line of attack the establishment is going to use against free broadband it’s “by part nationalising BT it’s going to harm it’s share price, which will in turn affect pension funds invested in BT”

Yeah it's a belter. Sure there are bigger issues, but internet is absolutely an essential today, everyone who's ever dealt with them hates Virgin Broadband and friends, and it's really hard to argue against without sounding like you just love lovely extractive companies and hate people having good things. Anyone under 70 (years of age and/or £1000s a year) is going to be for this.

I love the apparent idea that building social housing is non-ideological.

"Social housing" - i.e. housing built by the private sector with an arbitrary cap on rent based on local prices - is non-ideological and just common sense because it makes a profit. "Council housing", built by local authorities with rent set at a level determined by the actual ability of people to pay is completely ideological and worse than Hitler because there's no profit to be made for sensible, non-ideological landlords.

It's so glaring that the alleged sensible, non-ideological centrists are actually considerably more Tory than loving Thatcher.

The Rudd government had full control for 6 years and then saw a Liberal/National coalition take over. This is part of the warning really: The reason the FT likes Corbyn is because they perceive his socialism to be a temporary inconvenience compared to brexit which they think would be hard to reverse.

Also - whether they dare put it in such terms out loud or not - they recognise that Corbyn's fairly soft-left reforms are the only thing that will keep capitalism alive over the medium term. For all the screaming, they know that not letting the current pressure that's building up around the world out it's going to go bang in ways that make the first half of the 20th century look mild.

(Jesus that site has a lot of popup newsletter / cookie / adblocker bullshit)

quote:

"In 1979 I presented my results," he tells us, "and the conclusion was to forget about copper and get into fibre. So BT started a massive effort - that spanned in six years - involving thousands of people to both digitise the network and to put fibre everywhere. The country had more fibre per capita than any other nation.

How to choose the right business broadband
"In 1986, I managed to get fibre to the home cheaper than copper and we started a programme where we built factories for manufacturing the system. By 1990, we had two factories, one in Ipswich and one in Birmingham, where were manufacturing components for systems to roll out to the local loop".

At that time, the UK, Japan and the United States were leading the way in fibre optic technology and roll-out. Indeed, the first wide area fibre optic network was set up in Hastings, UK. But, in 1990, then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, decided that BT's rapid and extensive rollout of fibre optic broadband was anti-competitive and held a monopoly on a technology and service that no other telecom company could do.

"Unfortunately, the Thatcher government decided that it wanted the American cable companies providing the same service to increase competition. So the decision was made to close down the local loop roll out and in 1991 that roll out was stopped. The two factories that BT had built to build fibre related components were sold to Fujitsu and HP, the assets were stripped and the expertise was shipped out to South East Asia.

"Our colleagues in Korea and Japan, who were working with quite closely at the time, stood back and looked at what happened to us in amazement. What was pivotal was that they carried on with their respective fibre rollouts. And, well, the rest is history as they say.

I'm glad she's dead.

Bit mad to credit Thatcher for this. Mostly a BBC project, and when she actually had to acknowledge computers existed so she could brag to the japanese that we also can do a technology, she ignored that project entirely to wave a spectrum around.

They seem to have lost interest in computers all just at the moment ARM showed up, which is the biggest lost opportunity since north sea oil.

The BBC project was part of a Thatcher policy, Acorn received massive finding direct from central Government for the BBC micro, and only existed because of NEB investment in Sinclair. Thatcher had been banging on about computers since her days as Education Secretary.

Of course she reverted to type - possibly (almost definitely) under massive pressure from the Yanks, because the UK moving into the microprocessor market really seriously threatened Silicon Valley - but it's silly not to credit her for literally the only good thing she did in her entire career. (I don't credit her for soft-serve ice cream because it's an abomination)

It's a very good show. Liked who did Sinclair in that, really got across how much of a bellend he must've been to work for. Apparently the phone throwing scene used to really happen (!) nothing like a low stress environment when you're trying to make stereos out of duff parts bought on the cheap.
