It's heartening to see, but I would caution you from drawing conclusions from what people post online. Most people don't bother posting online about news, and they get their news from mainstream media outlets. Mainstream media outlets are still continuing to manufacture consent and push the standard US line.

imo the conjecture about “is this over lithium “ is pointless. the US would support any right wing coup in Latin America for any business reason.

it seems apparent that the main push for the coup came from the Bolivian right, because they’ve been stupidly honest about their real motive, which is to completely dispossess Indigenos an restore white Christian rule to the country. the whole thing reeks of desperation since they knew they would lose the election, and if the MAS could rule for four straight terms it could break their power permanently and relegate them to a minority party that could only ever form governments in coalition with liberals. why even bother at all when you could just take the whole enchilada?

as far as the US goes, our geopolitical motives have more weight than the lithium specifically.

yeah like i said, i understand this is all marginal stuff on the "paying attention to poo poo" left, but i think consolidating that sphere with incredibly vibrant examples of Stupid Imperialism is illustrative to a lot of people who otherwise might have remained rather wooly

the average age of the person watching MSNBC is 65 and it's harder to control narratives, as much as various state and private actors try to manipulate those narratives

Strong, pathetic erections.

this whole farce should be good for showing libs how the right weaponizes their naive belief that people fundamentally operate on good faith, if only they'd listen

get that OUT of my face posted:

is there a greater than zero chance that this becomes a civil war

MAS militants have literally been chanting 'civil war now' for days

that having been said, while some of them do have guns, it is a motley collection of civilian firearms - break-action shotguns, bolt-action rifles, revolvers, etc. - in the hands of people who, though relatively well organized, are definitely not an army.

both sides are preparing for the possibility of a civil war, I think, but I don't think either side actually particularly wants one to happen and I'm positive neither side wants to be the one to officially kick the thing off. the coup plotters know that it would destroy any chance at consolidating power or building a perception of legitimacy, and MAS and their supporters know a lot of people would probably die.

it can still easily happen, the country is a tense fuckin powder keg right now, but if it does happen it will have broken out essentially by accident

Shockingly this public transit service which primarily helps the cities' poorest residents has been "temporarily" suspended by the coup government

Guterres coverage is funny because most of the time he's really, really tame and mostly just centers on climate change and refugee matters, but it's enough to get Ken Roth to go to Sapo (Think Portuguese MSN) to go complain on how he doesn't take human rights serious enough for not condemning Yemen, Palestine and Venezuela hard enough and Sapo is lovely enough to just go "man of human rights related org criticizes our former pm on it" with such typical portuguese vagueness magic that makes it sound like he just mailed us to go "please have me in to scream to the Portuguese populace to demand his UN resignation for me pretty please"

John Dolan I think.

Dolan's opinion on Obama is that he was a quiet killer, which is best for maintaining empire because it keeps all of our ugly affairs out of the public eye and on the margins where only lefty loons will care about them. Right wingers hated Obama because what they want is a cheerleader like George Bush who will make them feel great about killing people. It doesn't matter how counter-productive that sort of stance is, because to reactionaries their psychological validation is more important than anything else - and I think you can see a lot of that playing out with the Bolivian coup right now.

I also wonder if three years of Trump being president hasn't trained liberals into seeing legalistic coups as good things. Democrats have spent the last two years trying to figure out any way they can to force Trump out of office without having to engage in any political contest, and I think it's primed liberals to see any allegation of rules violating as justifying direct action to unseat an elected head of state.
