I think it might have something to do with steam engines.

Do they measure likelihood to vote by how shouty they are?

Voting in the past is one of the best indicators for voting in the future - so getting more people voting in 2017 makes this election easiser aswell, 18-24 turnout should break 60% easily, I think 65%

Yeah, my policy is that a 1"/25mm standard water pipe to residential properties and standard 110mm soil pipe from residential properties should be paid for through progressive rates or general taxation, that water waste should be limited by public service campaigns and hosepipe bans when necessary, and that metering should be done at the village/block/pump house level to best target those campaigns (and to fix their leaks, which account for most wasteful use).

If you need a bigger bore water pipe to fill your backyard swimming pool, you pay more and get metered, if you need a supply for commerce or industry, you pay more and get metered.
I mean, you can fill a backyard swimming pool with a smaller pipe, it just takes longer. Commerce and industry definitely needs to pay though, otherwise you're certain to end up in a situation where companies use 10x the water to increase productivity by 1%.

OwlFancier posted:

The hell do austrians do all day just loving run around doing the helicopter dick with the hosepipe?
No idea. Like, even at peak domestic water use in Denmark back in the 70's we still used half what they do today. Did they just decide to keep using more and more water while we started conserving it? Are they operating under the assumption that they have infinite glacial water to drink?

Do not work during a strike please, it is scabbing. Do not teach during a strike, that is also scabbing. The whole point is to cause disruption. Yes, it absolutely sucks that those kids are getting shafted because the bosses don't care about making sure they're being taught by offering an acceptable pay and benefits package, but it absolutely is not your fault that the bosses aren't doing that. Putting responsibility on us is exactly what the bosses want to do, and undermines any collective action (see: headlines surrounding literally every public service strike pointing the finger at striking workers for inconveniencing service users).

Just make sure that your students know exactly whose fault it is that they're not getting taught.

Barry Foster posted:

I know your heart's in the right place, and we all care about our students, but unless the lesson is "none of us are gonna teach you the stuff you're supposed to be taught and here's why" please do not do this, minimising disruption is actively hurting Union action. These kids are getting screwed along with us, we need to make sure that future kids aren't by not playing into the bosses' hands. They should be angry - just try to make sure their anger is pointed in the right direction

Thanks to all who replied the other day btw, it was a big help. I've spoken to a bunch of people at work and they're watching my back for me & covering where possible, just got to keep my head down for a few more weeks and I can take some time.

Fun Shoe
The Guardian have got Joel Golby writing weekly election articles, and as usual he comes up with some really funny lines:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/nov/15/boris-johnson-internet-voters-prime-minister-vogue-video

quote:

Mike Gapes – the man with the defeated air of someone who has been turned away from a city centre Laser Quest because “you can’t play on your own here, mate, that’s weird” – has released his campaign poster this week, which is basically just a red and yellow Labour campaign poster with a small disclaimer at the bottom to remind voters that he defected to the party now known as “The Independent Group For Change”, remember, and also a bizarrely heartbreaking call to arms in the top right corner, reading: “It will really help me if you display this poster in your window. Thank you.” I don’t know why, but the polite, thin, desperation of this actually makes me weepingly sad. Gapes, politely asking that you display his campaign poster in your window, thanks, for as long as it takes for someone to report him for misrepresentation to the Electoral Commission and he sadly has to go round all the shops and houses in Ilford, and ask that they take them down.

Sorry, was too slow writing my first post, edited in a little response re your last one.

Re-join UCU so you're legally protected when you strike, do not teach except to explain whose fault it is that they're not getting taught, do not respond to student emails except to tell them whose fault it is they're not getting a response, do not do any admin without exception because lol gently caress admin. There'll be materials on the UCU web site to help direct students' anger towards the real enemy. I totally understand that trying to minimise the disruption is intended to keep the students onside, but it is counterproductive: it feeds into the idea that this is our fault, rather than the bosses.
