Veni Vidi Ameche! posted:Stephen King is actually a very good author, and, at his best, completely untouchable in his space. The problem is he should have stopped writing novels 25 years ago. Let him stick to short fiction from now on. I have a personal grudge against Steven King for writing Under The Dome. Have you ever read a book that is kinda terrible, but you keep thinking maybe it's about to get interesting, it's going to all come together, and while you're not really enjoying this you do want to see where it goes... Under The Dome is nine hundred pages of that, with a good amount of really hosed up and gratuitous garbage, followed by the worst ending, an idea so bad it retroactively makes the entire book the dumbest thing you ever saw. gently caress that book. Always reminded that King's reaction to the movie ending of The Mist was basically 'drat, wish I'd thought of that'.

Ghostlight posted:yes and it was called the tommyknockers Even King doesn't like that one. Not as much as Rage, which he intentionally let go out of print, but he full well admits The Tommyknockers is awful. That's the last book he wrote while still coked out of his mind at pretty much all times. King has issues in his writing, and I think his short stories are far better quality than his novels overall, but I can definitely see a difference between his books during his substance abuse issues (he apparently barely remembers writing Cujo), during recovery (The Dark Half, and Four Past Midnight), and what he considers post-recovery (starting from Needful Things on). Another he doesn't like is Dreamcatcher, which he wrote following being hit by that van, and was doped to the gills on Oxycontin at the time.

I'm willing to believe King wrote worse books than Under The Dome, and maybe even some got published. I don't know how that's a thing, but I'm going to accept that it is, and I'm not going to try and disprove you by reading them myself. This forum definitely knows a thing or two about terrible poo poo.Paladinus posted:Haha, if you think the book is terrible, try watching the show (on your Microsoft Surface). Under the Dome is mediocre bad. Boring, and meandering, and never quite gets where it seems to be going. The Tommyknockers and Dreamcatcher are completely batshit bonkers on top of being bad.

Like his writing or not, he knows what he's about with it (he enjoys it and it makes them dollars), and is insanely dedicated about it. He's spoken before about how he set himself a daily quota of at least ten pages/2,000 words a day, and sets three months to get a first draft done. He struggled after getting hit, since he found it painful to sit up for long periods of time. That he got back in the saddle to the degree he has is impressive.

I've got nothing against the "library book sale" tier of authors - I used to read Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton when I was a kid and they're fine. But King's stuff in the last decade has been aggressively bad. I bought Cell at an airport bookstore thinking it would be harmless fluff with a decent King concept, but it was just so bad. Cell and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo are the only books I've ever donated to Goodwill.

I do get the idea that brutal misanthropy is a requirement for writing the best short stories.
