This thing where Labour directly link to Tory campaign materials and make fun of it is brilliant. Totally off topic: There is a series on Netflix called "The Toys That Made Us". It has had some very entertaining episodes about the history of iconic toy lines (the one about Barbie is great). They announced a new series today with an episode about wrestling figures. I have never been a wrestling fan myself but I know there are some big advocates in the thread so I wanted to tip you off in the hope you will be able to watch this telly programme and find it not only cool but also good.

Barry Foster posted:I gotcha (edited my post too) on the UCU chat earlier, if you join the union please join the pickets too as and when you can. you can do teach outs, but honestly, that isn't a big thing and will be attended poorly and takes you off the picket. don't worry about what your students think, just make sure you explain to them what is happening and why, they can make up their mind and usually students end up sympathetic. if you are teaching postgrads in partic, be sure to emphasise that if they intend to go into academia that this strike is for their future. the casualisation of contracts is utter piss for their future prospects, make sure to get that stuff across when you can. you do not have to tell your students or boss that you are striking either, but it might be worth informing those with disability/access issues in a private manner to ease stress on their daily life.

Gonzo McFee posted:Amazing. The future is so poo poo. "Weapons of Math Destruction (O'Neil, 2016, ch. 6) posted:Even putting aside the issues of fairness and legality, research suggests that personality tests are poor predictors of job performance. Frank Schmidt, a business professor at the University of Iowa, analyzed a century of workplace productivity data to measure the predictive value of various selection processes. Personality tests ranked low on the scale—they were only one-third as predictive as cognitive exams, and also far below reference checks. This is particularly galling because certain personality tests, research shows, can actually help employees gain insight into themselves. They can also be used for team building and for enhancing communication. After all, they create a situation in which people think explicitly about how to work together. That intention alone might end up creating a better working environment. In other words, if we define the goal as a happier worker, personality tests might end up being a useful tool. The three key points she determines for whether an algorithmic system fits into her WMD category: 1) Opacity - can we see inside to see precisely how it works, can we update it with relevant feedback, can we detect when it's going wrong? 2) Scale - how widely is it deployed? is it in widespread use by, say, companies who people need to apply to, to get work in order to live? 3) Damage - what effects does it have on peoples' lives when it does go wrong? It's an easy read. CGI Stardust fucked around with this message at 17:40 on Nov 15, 2019 |

Absolute bullshit poll weightings that seem to assume only half the 18-24 year olds who voted last time will, yet somehow +10% of the 65+ will drag themselves out into cold midwinter. Just repeat to yourself constantly that polls are used to influence outcomes, not predict them. Plus of course the usual screeching media bias. E: Boris is still standing in Uxbridge. Goddamn I wish I still lived there so I could vote against him like 2017. I wonder if this is his attempt to 'accidentally' get fired and oh no I couldn't get my deal through those traitors rabble rabble whoops back to being a high paid columnist.
