This thing where Labour directly link to Tory campaign materials and make fun of it is brilliant.

Totally off topic: There is a series on Netflix called "The Toys That Made Us". It has had some very entertaining episodes about the history of iconic toy lines (the one about Barbie is great). They announced a new series today with an episode about wrestling figures. I have never been a wrestling fan myself but I know there are some big advocates in the thread so I wanted to tip you off in the hope you will be able to watch this telly programme and find it not only cool but also good.

You definitely can, but the sort of people in the UK who have backyard swimming pools other than paddling pools are the sorts of people who would complain to the manager of fluid dynamics about why their pool takes so long to fill with a 1" pipe, so they can get a big pipe and a meter and pay more for their water.

I like how he can't even bring himself to endorse any freedoms that are essential for life like free healthcare or free water or free access to housing and heating, so he goes with "the freedom most often appealed to when disowning a gay son or refusing to teach that condoms exist".

Cheers bud. Now I just gotta hope the UCU website starts working properly before the 25th lol

on the UCU chat earlier, if you join the union please join the pickets too as and when you can. you can do teach outs, but honestly, that isn't a big thing and will be attended poorly and takes you off the picket. don't worry about what your students think, just make sure you explain to them what is happening and why, they can make up their mind and usually students end up sympathetic. if you are teaching postgrads in partic, be sure to emphasise that if they intend to go into academia that this strike is for their future. the casualisation of contracts is utter piss for their future prospects, make sure to get that stuff across when you can.

you do not have to tell your students or boss that you are striking either, but it might be worth informing those with disability/access issues in a private manner to ease stress on their daily life.

this is your regular plug of Cathy O'Neil Weapons of Math Destruction, where one of the things she goes over is precisely this sort of system. Excerpt below:

"Weapons of Math Destruction (O'Neil, 2016, ch. 6) posted:

Even putting aside the issues of fairness and legality, research suggests that personality tests are poor predictors of job performance. Frank Schmidt, a business professor at the University of Iowa, analyzed a century of workplace productivity data to measure the predictive value of various selection processes. Personality tests ranked low on the scale—they were only one-third as predictive as cognitive exams, and also far below reference checks. This is particularly galling because certain personality tests, research shows, can actually help employees gain insight into themselves. They can also be used for team building and for enhancing communication. After all, they create a situation in which people think explicitly about how to work together. That intention alone might end up creating a better working environment. In other words, if we define the goal as a happier worker, personality tests might end up being a useful tool.

But instead they’re being used as a filter to weed out applicants. “The primary purpose of the test,” said Roland Behm, “is not to find the best employee. It’s to exclude as many people as possible as cheaply as possible.”
...

Prospective workers must pick one option, without a clue as to how the program will interpret it. And some of the analysis will draw unflattering conclusions. If you go to a kindergarten class in much of the country, for example, you’ll often hear teachers emphasize to the children that they’re unique. It’s an attempt to boost their self-esteem and, of course, it’s true. Yet twelve years later, when that student chooses “unique” on a personality test while applying for a minimum-wage job, the program might read the answer as a red flag: Who wants a workforce peopled with narcissists? Defenders of the tests note that they feature lots of questions and that no single answer can disqualify an applicant. Certain patterns of answers, however, can and do disqualify them. And we do not know what those patterns are. We’re not told what the tests are looking for. The process is entirely opaque.

What’s worse, after the model is calibrated by technical experts, it receives precious little feedback. ... The companies hiring minimum-wage workers... are managing herds. They slash expenses by replacing human resources professionals with machines, and those machines filter large populations into more manageable groups. Unless something goes haywire in the workforce—an outbreak of kleptomania, say, or plummeting productivity—the company has little reason to tweak the filtering model. It’s doing its job—even if it misses out on potential stars.

The three key points she determines for whether an algorithmic system fits into her WMD category:

1) Opacity - can we see inside to see precisely how it works, can we update it with relevant feedback, can we detect when it's going wrong?
2) Scale - how widely is it deployed? is it in widespread use by, say, companies who people need to apply to, to get work in order to live?
3) Damage - what effects does it have on peoples' lives when it does go wrong?

It's an easy read.
