Loving the designs of all the Empire's capital ships. Even more so when they get blown out of the sky by Kircheis and crew.

Started watching all the new series after hearing about this last week. Loved the originals, and the sheer amount of episodes that were involved. It seems like the new episodes really curtail the back and forth of the various battles, and nothing gets the amount of time to breathe it did before. Pretty looking tho. So are you guys on the paid tier of Crunchyroll having any better success than I am lately? All I get is interminable loading screens, trying to watch episode 18 I've had to seek forward a few times again. The ads load and play 100% perfectly so I know it's not my connection.

Anybody know where die neue these episode 20 lands in the OG series? I never finished the original so wanted to get through these to catch up quick but I'm not sure what the equivalent point in the old show was It's where Beautiful gay Hitler breaks bad and let's the peasants get nuked by the noble leader

It's funny going back to the old show, the drop in animation quality is very noticeable, particularly the ship designs and how all the cast look much more similar. Though I prefer the low key designs of some stuff than the high anime designs of DNT like the close combat suits with their ridiculous swords. The story is way better though, that scene I spoilered above in the new series is basically Paul asking Reinhard and him saying Hmmm OK. The old show they argue, it's left ambiguous and Paul gets to show some great scheming, it's totally different for the characters.

Just finished the OVA today, really blown away by its consistency and stuff. I really love how, for all that the show can be very unsubtle about the characters' intentions and their philosophies, there's actually a lot left unstated. For example, I kind of love the way Rubinski and the Church of Terra were handled; instead of building them up into the Ultimate Evil, they are just kind of genuinely radical terrorist assholes. You don't need to go much deeper and we don't need a ton of explanation. And of course Earth isn't magic or anything, it's just... there.

Has anyone seen the dubbed episodes on Funimation? The first two episodes are free, but you need a paid account to watch the rest of the season. The dubs in episodes 1 and 2 seemed pretty bad imo. Obviously subs are better for solo watching, but I'd like to get some friends into the new series too. Do the dubs get any better?

When the coup happens on the capital planet, she leads a peaceful rally where the occupying force intervened and Jessica is beat to death causing a mass riot.

Raising this thread up to say 1) I'm going through die neue these, 2) I'm after that I'm picking up where I left off in the old series (after iserlohn, some old imperial burns his house down trying to kill people?) and 3) because I'm loving this poo poo and because of covid I'm considering the books if they're still up on Amazon.

Alright finished DNT and breezed through the original content up to that point. Just watched the episode following it and man I hope we get another season, would love to see Updated Julian space fight. I will say it's a bit rough coming from DNT and going into the older series. I can recognize most of the faces and names but some older designs have me clueless ( reinhard's admiral with the mustache and balding dark hair).

I really want to like LOGH. I really, really want to like it. But the series' Pro-monarchy, anti-democratic message puts me off it way too much. Like, I love the music and the presentation of the original OVA, but man gently caress Monarchy, even when its 'enlightened'.

I don't think it's "pro monarchy" so much as "pro Reinhardt" - it's pretty clear that Reinhardt is an exceptional individual in exceptional circumstances, and even the system that bore him would be hard pressed to replicate him. As corrupt and weighed down by inertia as the FPA is, they're still fighting the Empire, a notably larger entity, on an equal basis until Reinhardt takes the helm. As exceptionally talented as Reinhardt is, he only had the opportunity to arise as fast as he did because of the Kaiser's patronage and lethargy - another Kaiser could easily have snuffed out Reinhardt's career, even his life, without a second thought.

it is a theme that there are good and bad results attributable to the two types of government, and i don't blame anyone for finding the comparison repulsive. my perspective is that the political philosophy of the story is heavily rooted in its place and time: post-war japan.

I actually thought it presented an interesting argument here - the central question of what is better: a corrupt democracy, or a good monarchy? Yang fights so hard to keep his democracy alive and unconquered when we see how it's a shithole early on, with corrupt leaders and the whole "violently mess up people who speak up". Yet we also see the massive flaws in a monarchy - good or bad, it still stomps on the little people.

I always kind of viewed Reinhardts arc as a tragedy rather than a pro-authoritarian screed. He's going to die someday, and some new autocrat will take over. The final scenes of logh are ominous because there's not long before a new period of upheaval caused by the nobility he had initially intended to destroy. Even if you get a benevolent autocrat, they're going to die someday and leave behind a power vacuum

Even if you get a benevolent autocrat, they're going to die someday and leave behind a power vacuum The benevolent monarch will ALWAYS die, and unless you can guarantee unlimited great men to rule, you're hosed. See: Rome for a prominent example. And one of the benefits of a democracy, assuming it's not corrupt and failing, is that you can theoretically kick out an incompetent rear end in a top hat. Therefore the moral of LoGH is that we need benevolent AI overlords and we need them now.

I see yang and Reinhardt not so much as democracy vs fascism as the stories of two radicals working within their power structures to effect change. Yang struggles against himself and his leaders because the liberal democracy he loves so much is designed to obstruct and silence people like him. Dude just wanted to keep his head low. Reinhardt is more effective not because autocracy is great, but because the methods autocracy uses to wield power are effective. The tragedy of Reinhardt is that those same methods will likely be used to destroy any good he did. Pomp fucked around with this message at 17:04 on Apr 19, 2020 |
