As someone who is/was in an eerily similar situation to his own, I can tell you that he is quite clearly in a better place now if he is able to speak so clearly and strongly about it.

What sucks is that an overwhelming majority of spousal abuse is committed by men and a common characteristic of male abusers is to blame the victim and lie about stuff like "she hit me first." I ain't defending the cops or DA here, but humans are emotional and use past experiences and pattern recognition to inform future decisions. I had a close friend of mine from growing up who went to the Marines and got PTSD then became a giant shithead libertarian. He had to check himself into a mental hospital because his wife beat the poo poo out of him and held a knife to him on multiple occasions. He had changed so much over the years and when he finally told me about it years later, I found myself not believing him at first. I just had to listen, and I realized he was telling the truth. Domestic violence is horrible but the way he experienced it was very different from the typical way you hear about it in media
