Well, for one I supported my best friend in her transition by giving her a free place to stay and paying for her medicine to do so, but I also could have just made that up because we are on a comedy forum. See the issue with gatekeeping in a place like this?

Sure, here's a polygon article about the guy that needed his name removed from 5e books: https://www.polygon.com/2019/2/20/18232181/dungeons-dragons-zak-smith-sabbath-abuse-accusations-players-handbook

Now, this is gonna look like they cleaned up the problem. But the stain was already there. This article doesn't include a few key details, like how it was Mike Mearls (something something second in command or so I forget) who contracted this guy (and also Pundit, a different sort of rear end in a top hat) to consult, despite being warned a HUGE amount on twitter and via email and forums and stuff. He didn't just dismiss those warnings out of hand, he said "Hey, email me (obviously not a Hasbro PR person or something, just me, a loving guy) with any problems you had." He them sent Zak some messages about how whiners were complaining about him, and reportedly also sent some of the emails (including addresses) to Zak for whatever he wanted to do with them.

After all the poo poo broke, yes, WOTC released the statement in the Polygon article. Mearls himself also posted, with the most mealymouthed post anyone has ever posted, including guys who posted "I have a mouthful of meal right now!" He basically downgraded Zak to the title of "A certain playtester I barely knew" instead of "Consultant and apparent friend Zak S."

So yeah. Plenty of details, plenty of problems. For me, not worth it to support this game, and I have yet to have given the 5e era of WOTC any of my money. But mileage may vary.

Thank you for a reasonable reply. From what I have read this is beyond hosed up and I will try and push my group to a different system and not support WotC. All anybody had to do is provide some context. Not that I didn't provoke them, but then again this is Something Awful.

Let's be honest though, the original post I responded to didn't mention any rape and without context as a new player it sounded like some nerd was butthurt because of a stupid pretend game. I'll apologize now that I have the full story and context, but I would honestly expect to receive one in turn.

So you tell Arivia that just posting isn't doing any good, and when she informs you she does do important things offline you immediately try to claim it doesn't count and can't be real because anyone could make it up? Why?

(I know why, you were planning on dismissing everything she said and when it turned out she does do real life activism you had to immediately backpeddle to "Well you could be lying so it doesn't count")

"Professional harm" should've clued you in that it wasn't talking about just stupid harmless forums drama.

This involved doxxing, coordinated harassment, and people having to quit the games industry to try and escape.

But let's be honest though, and admit you were just looking to dismiss anything Arivia had to say.

Why not make another thread to discuss the mechanics and how they suck and keep this thread for the actual interesting discussion then start handing out probes whenever the bad thing happens again.
We did that with I think it was last iteration of this thread. One was empty except for new posters shouting into the void and the occasional real bad advice. The other was very active and full of dwarflore posts and the same new posters asking why there was a second, shittier version of the 5E thread on page four.

I'm pretty sure you can guess the punchline.

Well the new Eberron book is out, and I haven't bought it yet because I wanted to see what I already had and what I still need. And basically it seems like we were lied to or Beyond screwed up real bad. Originally those of us who bought Wayfinders were going to have it upgraded to finalized versions of anything that was in it, and have all the Artificer stuff automatically added in.

Then they pulled back on it a bit and said well okay you will only get one archetype of Artificer, the rest won't be included.

Right now I have no Artificer, not just one subclass but the class is no longer available to me at all. Upon further inspection I also no longer have the Dragonmark variants to the races. There is probably other stuff I got from Wayfinders that is gone, but I am not sure right now.

Pretty much my opinion of a lot of SA threads. When you try to actually discuss the topic at hand or maybe bring up interesting things you are doing with it, a lot of people will ignore it. Then discussion starts again once someone brings up the idea that X is poo poo for the 5th time or that someone is a bigot and we should therefore stop liking X thing.

Guys. How can I make a feud between dwarvish clans an interesting aspects for PCs to enjoy without massive dice roll combat or having them talk and talk and talk and talk. Maybe one of the clans goes rogue/dishonorable and makes an ambush attack in a diplomatic meeting along with vicious creatures and magic that kills many of them. Then they turn against that clan, but to their suprise they have allied themselves with a dragon, hill giants and other creatures?

Dwarves dig deep and fearlessly for a reason, and that reason is, the earth is the stoutest shield you can ask for and if something bad happens you can shut the door and spike it.

Or, y'know, collapse the cavern.

A clan grudge is not about two dwarves yesterday, it's about dozens of dwarves over centuries. Doing something bad. So they shut the door and spiked it. (Or, rarely, collapsed the cavern.)

So, work out your clans, who they are and have been, what drives them, how they act. Hideous poisons, strength of arms, servitors of selfish gods, arcane madness? Then once you know what they do, get some whats and whys and hows of the things they did to each other.

And here's how the racket works. The oldest grudges, the worst grudges, no dwarf can be trusted with, not alone. Somebody's going to have more tenth cousins on one side than the other. So there are these buried dwarven chambers, and the dwarves say, oh, ancient history, very cursed, but hey outsiders, tell us what you find in there and you can keep anything valuable since we've got on without it for so long it must not be important.

But what they're angling for is some kind of resolution. ...and possibly the reassurance that there isn't anything worse than old dead mistakes festering down there. They've already had to shut an emergency backup door and spike it. Maybe that one won't open until you prove yourselves a little.

The facts of each clan history will tell you how to describe what clues your players find, but when it comes to what they report, well, it isn't as though the dwarves already know what happened, is it? Maybe there's some advantage to favoring one side over the other, even apart from the facts of history.

Hey folks. With regards to the Zak/Mearls convo above:

The history of 5E is personal to many people, and as I'm the guy who wrote this post, I'm confident people know I think the goons who don't like WotC because of the Zak S poo poo are cool and valid, and that poo poo shouldn't be disregarded.

That said, we've just had a conversation that basically started with "this thread will never know peace" and led to a fight between goons who immediately backed down once they had context. It's inevitable that a long thread about a popular game that routinely gets new posters is going to go over old topics, so I don't mind goons telling new posters about it, but if this keeps happening I'm gonna bring back the old thread's "don't talk about here" rule. For now, if anyone still wants to ask/talk about it they should probably go to the Industry thread.

I'm surprised more people haven't dropped out of the trees with blades coated in Apocalypse World derivatives, but... yeah? It kind of depends on what you mean by RAW.

Like, if there's some wasteland madman who barely does language but knows ropes like brothers, is it breaking RAW to write down "when you try to climb after Grieve he's literally had his entire life to trap everything, so roll +sharp and..."? Is it breaking RAW to have a rules element that says "when you have leverage over someone and try to manipulate them, roll +hot and..." but leaves the determination of what counts as leverage and whether PCs have it entirely up to the GM?

Because Apocalypse World is a game with enough information on how the rules work and how to write your own rules that it inspired an entire corpus of follow-ons.

I am not sure pointing them toward the rather blah Artificer would be a good idea.

The Artificer started out interesting but needed work, but after the first playtest they went real hard on the boring blah and possibly just bad game design of just another spellcaster with cantrips and no actual interesting unique mechanics in their subclasses. One feature of the new Artificer might be better than the original playtest, the rest was largely a downgrade.

I am not sure the companion for the one Artificer subclass is really all that better than the Ranger Beastmaster, especially with the UA on alternate class features.
