I’m guessing that this might not be a big deal to most people in this thread but 0 and the Kiwami games are all going to be on Xbox game pass next year, no release date, just “early” so I’m guessing that end of March at the latest.

Edit: Should I play the Kiwami games first to avoid spoilers or go straight to 0? I suppose the other consideration is does 0 make QoL changes that would be noticeably missing if I played it before Kiwami 1?

Do them in order of release. Start with Zero. It’s the most complete, tells a great story, and you really need zero backstory for the series in order to get into it. There are things in there for fans, but they’re winks and nods instead of Major Points You’ll Miss. It’s a fantastic game and sets up the rest of the series.

Kiwami 1 feels like good long DLC for Zero after that. It adds quality of life to the PS2 original and runs on the same engine as Zero, but the story and quest design was from the PS2 era and somewhat primitive. It’s worth going through, but not a highlight.

Kiwami 2 is the goddamn best because it is based on a very good (and crazy) story and also incorporates the new Dragon engine for fights.

Enjoy Zero, dabble in the story of Kiwami 1, and then dive back in fully for Kiwami 2.

Kiwami's story loving sucks if you don't play Zero first. Without Zero, I have no clue how anyone cared about any of these characters.

Unofficial English subs for the extended story trailer. Some bits in there I missed watching the original.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFp4VtsPLC4

At 9:30, seems like the guy is implying Ichiban is Secret Korean, which probably has something to do with Joon-gi Han's return from the grave. The video's ending also seems to imply that Kiryu is there specifically to serve as the Secret Ultimate Megaboss. "I am the guardian of the treasure" is absolutely some poo poo you'd hear from Estark.

I made friends with Ryo in Judgment and he straight up copies some of Majima's moves. It's nice to have a NPC ally that can actually accomplish something. Mr. Try-and-hit-me just stands there and gets his rear end whooped every single time, in fact he sucks rear end at not being hit.

I found a Shenmue reference in the Yakuza 4 remaster.

Kiryu gets handed an adult video, the title of which is something like "Girls of Yokosuka Gone Wild!" starring "Ryoko Hazuki" or something along those lines.

For anyone unfamiliar, Ryo Hazuki is the protagonist of Shenmue and he lives in Yokosuka.

I had a feeling that would be the case, and that this character would basically be the new Amon from now on.

As near as I can tell all the combat buddies in Judgement are just there to draw fire from the guys with guns that start showing up in random encounters in the last couple chapters, so you don't have to spend half of your time running over to the guy under Children's Park to heal mortal wounds.

Lol I'd forgotten that exclusive of the *TRUE VILLAIN* bullshit in Saejima's backstory, the hit he went down for was him specifically trying to whack Yoshiharu Ueno and failing, but killing eighteen Ueno Seiwa goons as collateral damage on the way to shooting Ueno point-blank and then leaving without checking if his mortal nemesis was still breathing or not.

Why does everyone call him Eighteen-Count Saejima instead of giant gently caress-up Saejima.

Only like 3 maybe 4 people even know what actually happened. Everyone else just knows Saejima went in and 17 people died, it doesn't really seem like that much of a stretch to assume that clearly he murdered nearly a dozen and a half people.

The most annoying thing about the Saijima twist for me is that it doesn't change a drat thing. Regardless of whether or not he ACTUALLY killed all those people, he still carried out what he thought was the murder of 18 people. It's played like, "it's okay, he didn't really kill them, see?". Yeah, but he tried to, and did a good job of trying to. And he's still partially responsible for their deaths. It's a pointless twist that attempts to change your perspective in a couple ways, but all it really accomplishes is setting up a bad guy to get beat up.

That's not how I see it at all. I take it more as another betrayal, as not only has he been in prison for 20 years for this, not only is his boss on the streets and out of his mind, he didn't even accomplish what he intended. His life is ruined, and he had even that one mark of honor taken from him.

This was mostly true up until a couple years ago; Y0 is almost a tonal 180 from previous depictions of the yakuza, and subsequent RGG stories followed suit.

In 0, the Tojo and Omi of 1988 are populated almost exclusively by thugs, crooks, and all-around assholes. You know, like the real yakuza, especially in that time period when they held much more power. Fast forward two decades, to the moment Sugai and Someya first appear in 6. Suddenly it's a race between two obvious jackasses to be the first to earn a beating from the Fourth Chairman. Then the last two battles of the game see Kiryu openly fighting high-ranking members of the Tojo Clan, the Yomei Alliance, and the Liberal Democratic Party at the same time, because IIRC the Evil Plan was to essentially combine all those organizations. He nearly picks a fight with the Prime Minister from his hospital bed.

One thing I find interesting is that Y6 and Persona 5 were in development around the same time, and both have a much more negative portrayal of the status quo than you'd expect from stories taking place in contemporary Japan. I honestly have no idea if this due to the kind of societal anxiety that made P5 such a hit, or if any Japanese media is following suit other than AAA games from Sega.
