Good thing Ontario has a College of Homeopathy so we can harness that placebo effect as a regulated alternative for long suffering patients who tend to be more regular visitors to emergency departments, spend more time in hospital and bounce between specialist waiting rooms

quote:

Brain stimulation is one of the most promising new treatments for mental illness. But when researchers in Finland took two groups of patients with chronic, severe depression and treated one group with rTMS – a non-invasive device that generates brief magnetic pulses to spark electric currents into a mood-related part of the brain – and the other with a fake rTMS device, just as many people got better on the sham device as the real one.

The results were disappointing.

Or were they?

Matthew Burke, the new director of Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital, counts among a group of placebo-effect researchers arguing these studies aren’t strictly failures at all, but missed opportunities for new ways to approach hard-to-solve problems, such as severe mental illness and chronic pain. To their view, the placebo effect isn’t a hassle in clinical trials; it’s pointing to new solutions – ones that may save money, reduce side effects and make health care more equitable.

Burke, just back from Harvard University where he researched placebos, sees people who live with pain for years in his work as a neurologist. He is frustrated at watching those hard-to-treat patients shell out for costly, unregulated alternative treatments when there’s sound science to support mainstream medicine harnessing the placebo effect in the public system. Doing so might also save public dollars: Patients with chronic illness aren’t only long-suffering, they also tend to be more regular visitors to emergency departments, spend more time in hospital and bounce between specialist waiting rooms.

Medicine only recently began to emerge from our background of bloodletting and snake oil, and y'all motherfuckers want to go back to those days? Give me RCTs or give me death.

And to anyone saying homeopathy is mostly harmless, homeopaths are among the most anti-vaccination quacks out there. And that's the part of medicine most responsible for increases in life expectancy in the past century and a half.

It's sad that Muscovy ducks need to give up their lives for this nonsense but at least at 10400 dilution they're probably still working on the original duck.
So, funny story about that. Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) goes by an obsolete binomial in homeopathy, Anas barbariae.
If you try to plug this into the wikipedia search bar, it comes up with "Did you mean anal barbarian?" and this is the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life.

Saying its good to keep lovely placebos (or POSSIBLY POISON) in our pharmacies because it might minimize a few ER visits is a galaxy hot take.

Yeah, lets increase the risk some sleep deprived parents grabs a fake medicine instead of tylenol for their baby's fever and roll the dice on if they die or have severe complications.

Not to mention all the times these garbage companies had a whoopsie and included a ton of nightshade or arsenic whatever in their pills by accident. Its loving ridiculous that stores like Shoppers even carry this garbage, but gently caress, thats capitalism.

Postess with the Mostest posted:

Not that I don't believe you but I've never seen that in any pharmacy or grocery store. I've never accidentally picked up a homeopathic thing next to tylenol or other drug store type things.

In Ontario many stores have the homeopathic stuff literally right besides real medicine for things like flus or fever.

Unfortunately, unlikely as it is, it's one of the few actual procedures open to block what is an obviously corrupt bill.

Why not protest during debate, you ask? Well, the Tories invoked closure on debate. Before the debate even began. Alberta is so loving slimy.

Yeah it's like, what else can she do, really? Obviously the official parliamentary procedures don't give her any options because the party in control doesn't give a poo poo.

The more doctors rail against placebos, the more effective it is when they prescribe them.

The disruptive powers of excessive national fecundity may have played a greater part in bursting the bonds of convention than either the power of ideas or the errors of autocracy.
The next time Albertan chuds call Quebec corrupt, we'll have plenty of ammunition to fire back at them.

No, it wouldn't be fine. But the fact that their fraudulent garbage is filled with literally who knows what is just another reason to ban it.

Trudeau's pretty clearly sidelining her so she can't mount an effective challenge for the leadership, imo.

Key here being a doctor who'd already decided you weren't in danger of dying before prescribing you nothing.

A toddler who needs that fever brought down could end up in the ER because his parents gave him essence of bullshit root instead of tylenol. That one's on the shelf right next to the other is awful even by Daryl Katz standards

She doesn't need press, she needs juice in the party. Look how Martin took over from Chretien. Martin wasn't popular with the electorate, he was popular with Liberal party insiders. Chretien occasionally threatened to call an election that he knew he would win just to beat Martin back from time to time.

I don't think the Liberals have had to deal with a rail strike yet. CP conductors went on strike in 2018 but it was over in a day when the company gave them a deal.

They aren't striking for pay increases, CN workers are on strike because CN keeps pushing 18 hour shifts on workers with short turnarounds and it become a massive safety issue for workers.
