Question about thief merits, in the event anyone here plays thief: I see a lot of people saying that Assassin’s Charge is pointless and to not put any merits into it. How come? I would think the big damage buff on weapon skills would be great. Is it mostly just because putting the points into Ambush lets you gear more attack, and that increases damage overall? Wouldn’t it be worth sacrificing one point of Ambush for one point of Assassin’s Charge, to get that extra strong WS every once in a while? Surely that would be more damage than an extra 3 accuracy, even if it is only every 5 minutes, right?

More accuracy all the time has more impact on the multi hit weapon skills and your ability to tp fast when that matters, and as you get up to endgame the amount of triple attacks your throwing out is already pretty absurd. It's ok to get a point if you want another button to press and do a little more white damage and get a little more tp every 5 minutes or w/e the cooldown is.

Not.. really? The goon shell is a few clingers on and jamie's army. Asura is the best/worst to be on, as it's highly populated but full of idiots. Expect poo poo shouts and mercing everywhere.

As for consistent money making dupe dynamis medals/voidwatch pulse cells farm ambuscade.

I came back hard in the past month and have been barreling forward in gearing my RDM (pretty certain I can debuff the wave 2 Dyna-D bosses and Omen caturae now) and am about halfway through Coalition ranks for Epeolatry.

The CP powerlevelling shouts on Asura drive me nuts, like it'd be nice to have a little quiet from time to time.

As fun as it is to talk about how this is a terrible game, Stockholm syndrome etc, the game is actually really fun and unique. It provides an MMO experience that isn't really seen anymore after WoW streamlined the genre, back when making weird off-the-wall decisions wasn't so big of a risk that no company would do so. Yeah there's a ton of rough edges and wonkiness, but I think the stuff that works well works VERY well.

Bosses are designed to be more about coming up with a winning strategy rather than memorizing a Simon-says style puzzle, NPCs ooze personality, quests require you to pay attention to them rather than following way points, content from a decade ago remains relevant, party and class composition are more flexible and interesting than the generic healer-tank-dps trifecta, etc. I could go on but I think everyone gets the point

I’ve been playing again recently. Last stretch I played I got WHM geared and a Yagrush, now working on SMN and got BLU good enough to solo/farm low tier junk. As others said, ffxi is still unique among MMOs, and even in comparison to its own history, the game right now is better than it has ever been in lots of ways. I play really casually and noncommittal, but with a friend and helping each other with various goals keeps things interesting.

But, it’s hard to overstate how loving terrible and stupid people are on Asura. Like 10 pothead retards just dominate /yells, and if it’s not them it’s mercs and cp bots.

Not to mention I have a hard time imagining some people handling the “Simon says” raid design of a modern mmo. Every single month, Ambuscade is pretty much brain dead easy and people still fail constantly. REMA PLDs with 500 mil worth of gear who have never subbed blu and have to look up a guide to make a simple spell macro, or still don’t understand how hate is generated in Ambuscade. Or DDs who join a VD shout and cant follow the simplest instruction of: don’t WS until the aura is down.

Simon says design is relatively simple, since it's just following simple instructions without needing to think critically or understand them. Go stand here when things light up, don't stand there when monster is doing X, etc.

Oh I completely agree. Modern fights that seem complex until you memorize them or ingrain muscle memory due to sheer repetition aren’t inherently better or more difficult. I’ve burnt out on xiv despite having a great group of players to raid with because of it, and enjoy ffxi’s design more overall. It’s just when ffxi players can’t follow the one instruction you gave them during the 10 minute wait/gather together before a straightforward fight that drives me nuts. XI obscures or just doesn’t convey simple mechanics at all, and provides very little player feedback other than death or failure, so it’s understandable, but frustrating nonetheless.

Them’s the breaks with the pug lyfe I guess tho

For doing VD in anything other than a smn burn? Moderately well geared. For doing lower tiers? Pretty easy.

It does vary wildly between updates on what works however.

Haven’t played since Abyssea, but I’ve also been thinking of resubbing with some friends as a sort of last hurrah to check out the new content and knock out a but of the old. I’ve got the gist of what RoE has to offer and I know with trusts a small group can knock out most content. Is that true for endgame too?

I’m wondering if a group of 3-4 players is enough to do what goes for current endgame after gearing up, or if that’s still reliant on full groups and alliances. Is NM camping still required for relevant gear? Assuming we take the plunge, is it worth it to play on a populated server for the economy or can we manage in a ghost town with less competition and being self sufficient with a small group - assuming that even matters.

Having a dead sub 200 person server is painful. Lack of ah resources, lack of pug people. It can be done if you have a solid core group. On asura you can usually shout up a decent number of idiot-fuckers to throw at content you cannot lowman/solo.

Dynamis divergence: 6-18 current high endgame. Farming can be done with a core group. Wave 2-3 needs more.

Reisinjima nm: t1-3 can be done with a few. Some fights hard. Helm nms need specific setups and peak poo poo.

Ambuscade: 6. Lower tiers can be done with a few.

Omen: most runs can be done with 6.

High tier battlefields: lower difficulties are easy to lowman

Master trials: peak gear brag fights.

Almost anything else can be done with a few.

Only if you have very good DD sets. As a tank, it's been out of the game since item level. Hell, even Paladin isn't that great of a tank anymore. It's all RUN or bust.

There's Ambuscade strats that center around them, but that's pretty much it.

So long as you can read, follow instructions, and understand the basic mechanics of the game, you're already ahead 95% of the paint-chip-eating playerbase on Asura that needs REMA weapons and Idris GEOs to fight apex mobs. The sad news is that katana weaponskills are kind of meh and any utility that NIN has (such as their ability to self-skillchain into magic burst, various low-to-mid-strength enfeebles, enmity +/-, subtle blow) isn't going to move the needle in most 135+ content, moreso in alliance fights. If you do a bunch of lowman stuff you'll find yourself getting more out of it, but any content that requres a deep drill into being extremely good (or just having a big number) at something will find NIN to be lacking.

Gorelab posted:

Dancer. Rudra's Storm is a stupidly good WS able to keep pace in a WS zerg and in lowman there's a lot of people who underestimate DNC's WS/skillchain potential, easily able to skillchain with itself while supercharging the closing Rudra's for extra damage, on top of having innate +23% SC damage. Not to mention the general survivability and utility that DNC brings: unique EVA/DEF/MEVA down debuff, debuff that increases crit rate, JA haste for anyone hitting a targeted mob, TP based healing both ST and AoE, TP-based Erase with AoE capability on cooldown, -damage taken stance, +double attack stance. It's a great job if you don't mind being overlooked but it definitely has a lot of things going for it that NIN, sadly, doesn't.

That being said, if you gear Dancer you'll also basically gear Thief as well as they share a lot of sets, so the sidegrades you need to do is get i119 TP gear to apply TH8 and keep beating on the mob to make that number go up (this is a quick and dirty explanation of things). That way if people look at you funny when you say you can bring a dancer, you can add on "also TH8 thief" and you might get more bites just because of drop rates. :v:

I like that ffxi has poo poo like yagrush and aegis and other crazy weapons that do crazy poo poo. Yea it makes it hard to balance but it's super fun to play with. And no other mmo really does that anymore. Wow did for a little bit in vanilla with TF but not anymore.

Well if your goal is to do big time endgame things, NIN is not the job you want to mess with. It does have a pretty interesting role as a solo job though.

A lot of safety with 3 levels of Utsusemi, decent weaponskills and the ability to Magicburst your own chains for decent damage. Takes a large investment though!

Ninja was one of the jobs I liked the most in FFXI.
