I use these all the time and they are absolutely amazing. https://www.amazon.com/3M-WorkTunes...2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== Framing guns, OMT, Ramsets, riding mower, compressor (even open the valve full throttle to empty and still nothing) The literal only downside is they make me sweat if I'm moving around. But the music is crystal clear, you can still hear people talk. They really are something. Also it looks like they're on sale right now.

The ones available here are apparently trash so I went for some bluetooth earbuds to go under normal ones instead, but the ear protectors make the earbuds fall out. Wired earbuds fit better but the cable causes trouble.

You should wear earpro on top of your earbuds if you're working with tools.

Speaking of earpro does anyone use those pass-through active blocking earmuffs for shop work? I'm thinking of the kind people use while shooting that pass through sounds below a set decibel. I've considered getting some for garage time but they don't seem like they'd be much different than passive earpro in that situation.

Yeah, *electronic* shooting muffs are good for shooting and loud bangs but not shop noise.

They are adjustable and when turned off work as passive muffs though. So you can tone down the noise while still actively boosting people talking, just not all the way up.

It's certainly possible that there's some sort of active earpro that has some kind of "human voice" passthrough while blocking all shooting/banging/motors noise, but all the shooting ones I've tried haven't been it. Also worth noting that the Impact Sports are not very high NRR. A cheap pair of full size muffs is going to be much higher.

I don't know why they discontinued them, the the Ryobi tek4 active muffs are awesome. I use them all the time in the shop, and I can hear someone the instant the tool stops spinning. They're hot and a bit heavy, but well worth it IMHO.SEKCobra posted:MSA Sordin Pro are very highly regarded for this purpose

I decided to buy a set to see if I liked them. I usually use in-ear buds, but the battery life isn't great so if nothing else it would be good to have another bluetooth ear protection option available to me. Earpro also applies to having kids. I am certain I have permanent hearing loss on my right side from my 1 year old shrieking as loud as she possibly could about six inches from my ear.

I saw them, they're still pretty big compared to the MSAs. I should have been more specific. The WorkTunes are on my list when my Ryobi set dies, as they've got Bluetooth and the Ryobis don't.

I also use the 3M bluetooth headset and they're wonderful. If I'm doing particularly noisy things, like an angle grinder in my metal box of a shop where the noise is just reverberating everywhere, I'll use in ear plugs and the 3m bluetooth over them. Sometimes I catch myself turning the music up to cover the sound of tools that comes through the muffs. Too much music isn't good for your ears either. So I use the in ears to cut down the noise of everything coming in.

Gotta be honest, I don't know. At least 6 hours? I usually wear them for that long during the work day, put em on the charger when I take lunch, but I know I've forgotten to put them on the charger. On the charger again when I leave for the day.

I'm really careful about my hearing now because I sure as hell don't want this getting any worse. I already have a hard time understanding people talking (especially higher voices) with background noise. Those 3M cans look great for the price. I ordered a pair to try out. I'll probably end up getting more just so I can leave them with equipment instead of always having to look around for my one good pair if I want to listen to something/need to hear if I get a text/call. After seeing them talked about I ordered the 3M WorkTunes Bluetooth deals. For the price they are pretty good at what they do. As noted, they are passive muffs with a Bluetooth receiver and internal speakers. For shooting, I have the Peltor 100, 300, 500, and the non-comm Comtac III. The sound quality from the 500 Bluetooth connection is garbage. I’m not even talking like what you usually consider for music, just listening to podcasts was painful. The first thing I tested was to throw a podcast on, and the WorkTunes have what I’d call acceptable quality. Since I had upgraded to the Comtacs for shooting, I have been using the 500s for landscaping duty, with the active (environmental) volume turned way down. Workable but not what it was probably intended for. Prior to that I was using AirPods under any of the muffs without any electronics turned on. The WorkTunes ones might be the ticket for non shooting stuff. Believe the cups (but haven’t confirmed) will take the gel upgrades, which is a nice upgrade if you want to throw money at it (they’re expensive and need replacement when they break down and lose their structure).

Re: those Howard Leight Impact Pro muffs really don't block a ton of noise on their own. However they work well for double plugging. Regular foamie plugs with those on top turned all the way up amplifies enough to let voices through fine, then gives you plenty of protection when they cut out. Haven't done that with tools, but lots of shooting like that.

I need to dispose of the metal beam from my old garage door opener, this thing is a 10ft long 1/4" steel T channel. What is my cheapest power tool option to chop this thing down? I'm tempted to go with a $20 Hazard Fraught angle grinder but if I'm not sure if that is my best value, Im willing to stretch my budget up to the $40 Bauer with a trigger instead of a slide switch, I am assuming paddles and triggers are better since they are more expensive. Is there a better angle grinder in this price range?

If you just need to get rid of it, you could list it as scrap on Craigslist, or just leave it at the curb, and I'm sure s rappers would have it gone almost immediately.

I would prefer not to support the local scrappers, if anything I would prefer to just put it in my recycle bin or scrap it myself. Hoping for scrapper to come by might be the smart option but it would waste a perfectly good excuse to buy an angle grinder. That said, I'm not sure what else I would do with the angle grinder except maybe use it to modify old computer cases.
