Bust Rodd posted:I honestly do not see a difference in the way Rick talks down to Beth & Summer and the way Rick talks down to literally everything else in the universe Well, he's called Summer a 'dumb bitch' and 'stupid bitch', and he kicked it up a notch in "The Old Man and the Seat" by calling a random grieving alien female a "loving twat" over nonsense bullshit. Rick is an extreme bully, but so far he's been limiting the bullying to Jerry and Morty; I enjoy the show very much but there is a bit of toxic creep starting to filter in. I don't believe S1 & S2 Rick had this poo poo going on.

It's a real shame they didn't make a more interesting character, but then I saw that it's an actual actors face and felt a bit bad.

I don’t think the show intentionally engages with this stuff, but it’s true at least summer seems to not have internalised the abuse like morty. There’s a real subtext about toxic masculinity with rick and I think it’s ok for a show to focus up on how men act towards other men but pretty much every family member is in some stage of an abusive relationship with rick so there’s always gonna be something to unpack with the way he interacts with Beth and summer from that angle, even if it’s not strictly intentional

Sounds to me like the writers room for this show is pretty sexist, probably starting around season 3. That's the only explanation I can think of, the idea that Rick is just a jerk to everyone is obviously silly and should be dismissed out of hand.

It's hard to say what the through-line is going to be for this season after just two episodes, but Rick is making a lot of enemies.

I'm not sure if I have to be clear about this but I meant that Rick is being deliberately depicted as having misogynistic traits. It dovetails well with Rick ultimately being Boomer as all living hell, with his magical powers allowing him to live out his fantasies with no tangible consequences. (Consequences to his relationships on the other hand...)

I mean, it's not impossible for the writer's room to have become sexist right at the same time as women were added to it. Maybe they decided to double the size of the writing team by adding four women who hate other women, I guess. That was also when the show became really critical of Rick being abusive to everyone in his life.

I'm going to call that they are building up to something. One of the things you'd hear from fascist Morty type fans yelling "no meta commentary just have fun" is incel slurs lobbed at the women in the writers room

I mean, seems pretty plausible that women can be more confident in exploring the aspects of Rick's toxicity that involve his treatment of women than a writer's room full of men might be. It's a theme that a lot of men want to stay away from because they aren't confident in doing it right or tastefully, while for women it's just working in the poo poo they deal with every day. The thing about Rick is that on some level he thinks he's 'above' most human flaws when he really, REALLY isn't. At least Bojack Horseman can admit he's a selfish coward with an addictive personality and next to no self-control.

I feel like they glazed over a lot of the plot points just for the sake of being mysterious enough so that people would have to guess how the plot really progressed. Honestly, I think this episode needed some revealing flashbacks. Now, can we please talk about divorce and sexual harassment for 3 more pages? I need at least 20 posts about the deep meanings of vanity cards.

Bust Rodd posted:Or maybe women can write gendered slurs without being part of the patriarchy And that episode was a giant bummer and I'm tired of watching cynicism win out because that's just every day of everybody's life now, so if this doesn't culminate with some plot about how our Rick created evil Morty and is on track to do it again or something, this is gonna' be my least favorite episode ever. Last season ended with the show rightly siding against Rick's worst impulses and then we yadda yaddad past that development with one line of dialog in the premiere when it would've been way more interesting to explore it and now we're just playing them for laughs again and if people don't grow or change, why am I watching this? People being cruel just because "lol cruelty" isn't funny anymore. Particularly not when it's an old white bigoted rear end in a top hat who thinks he's too smart for anything he thinks to be wrong. How do you watch videos of your fans torturing McDonald's employees and eating McNugget sauce off of the dirty ground and not learn that maybe you're cultivating the wrong audience? Please be going somewhere with this, but even if they are, this is a bad idea. Garfu posted:Hey did you guys know Dan Harmon was the voice of Heistotron and Elon Tusk??
