I forgot the Gauss Rifle crits through armour now, what a buff. Alright so I guess early on if I'm hunting for heavies I have to take out the little guys then flank and pray that all my shots don't go through CT and then try and get a knockdown right?

LRM spam isn't as good for knock downs any more, no.

These days I generally try to go for side shots to kill legs and accept that I'll need a few salvages to get a mech. 2 parts instead of 3 isn't terrible. That said, doing that you can get lucky and blat a torso, maybe get a lucky head hit plus a knock down and get the odd 3 parter.

On my third mission in career mode I ran into a Catapult C1 and was really excited when I knocked out the pilot until I remembered I dropped down to 2 salvage picks because I needed the cash after dumping all my money into a double heat sink.

Coming back to this game after a looooong hiatus with a new campaign and just played the Smithon campaign mission. I beat it first try, but ended the match with 3 of my pilots injured, every mech at least partially damaged, if not massively so, and almost out of ammo, just plinking away miserably at a couple of enemy similarly crippled mechs until I just DFA'd them.

What I'm saying is that lol, this owns.

The game is at its best when both sides are beat to poo poo and flailing desperately trying to keep overheats from cooking their ammo to death imo

Knockdowns work early game, but vs heavies and up stability becomes an extremely sub-par way to deal with enemies. Heavy mechs have 160 stab HP and the 1st tier pilot skill gives perma-entrenched, so there are just too many enemies that it's pointless against.

LRM boating should probably focus on pure damage or maybe crits.

Instead of headhunting, here's the difficulty settings I would use to make mech-pokemon a satisfying experience:
1. set salvage parts required to 4 or higher
2. for the first half a career, set salvage to generous
3. (optional) if you set salvage required over 4, get one of the mods that allows variant parts to be combined as soon as they're updated

That combo will make it less important to use gimmicks to collect intact mechs by making legging almost as good as pilot kills, but more salvage to compensate for mechs being harder to make.

Just had a mission like that and while I was doing it, I was of course swearing madly. But in retrospect, it was fun as hell. It was a poetic ending as the final mech I ended up knocking off both arms and legs without expressly trying to, just due to rng and the achievement popped, "Let's call it a draw." Like pottery. Now half my company is beat to poo poo and I'm low on money, iron man is the best way to play.

WHO is the goodest girl?
Haven't played since the first expansion and never bothered to finish the story campaign. Do the DLCs work into the base game story campaign at all or, if I already did 90% of it, is it best if I just finish what I started and then play career mode?

Patrat

The 'everyone is beat to poo poo and plinking at each other' stage of drawn out and brutal fights did lead to my worst moment ever in the original campaign. I had shot both the side torsos off a griffon so decided to largely ignore it.

Also I had managed to keep my Grasshopper with one of my original pilots (Glitch I think?) in it largely intact, happily engaging in laser disco death. So what does that disarmed griffon do? Obviously kick out the undamaged cockpit with a melee attack, killing the pilot and dropping probably my most powerful remaining combatant in a single blow.

I'd prefer to restart for a Career, since you'll be hilariously overpowered by the end of the campaign otherwise.

Yeah I've done it both ways. If you campaign first, you'll just breeze through most flashpoints and some of the contracts can be challenging, sort of.
Starting a fresh campaign, the flashpoints provide a nice line of progression in difficulty, required tonnage, and gear.

Pretty much all the second tier skills have their uses and you definitely want a couple Sensor Lock pilots. Like they said, most of your folks should be running Bulwark (which is why it should be the 2nd tier Guts skill, but I digress...)

Bulwark + Multi Shot + Breaching Shot
Sensor Lock + Master Tactician + the first level Piloting skill
Bulwark + Coolant Vent + whatever 1st level skill strikes your fancy

They served me well but my Phoenix Hawk, Vulcan, and Enforcer are now Crabs, Shadow Hawks, and heavy mechs.

The Phoenix Hawk still sucks but it came threw in a pinch as a lovely Grasshopper lol. The Vulcan is neat but basically just a COIL delivery mechanism

Anything in its ECM radius is immune to indirect missile fire and gets a boost to dodging direct missile fire. It also gives stealth charges to any friendlies in that radius as long as they don't fire or use an ability, which make the friendlies untargetable by enemies. The Raven gets 2 charges itself - this means you can fire or use an ability and remain untargetable. Exception: if an enemy unit gets inside the ECM radius, it removes stealth charges from everyone. You also have an active probe that applies sensor lock to anyone in a bigger radius, and breaks enemy ECM - situationally useful.

I like having a Raven tag along and cover my mechs, and its 2 mlas + SRM6 is a respectable loadout too. The stock mech has 2 heatsinks which you can safely ditch - I added a TAG for extra support, and up-armoured it a little. Even with heavy mechs making up the rest of my lance, I find the Raven worthwhile.

the downside of the plentiful new lostech: it really hurts your wallet to lose a gun because you can't replace it as a random drop and it's still rare enough to make you hunt for it

It's amazing how simply swapping out the old AC2s for LB-2-Xs and shoring up the armor turns your old Blackjack into a bonifide murder machine early on. That 4x12 damage is ridiculous against the opposition you face in the beginning.

Coolant Vent + Sure Footing is good in pretty much all circumstnaces.
Breaching Shot + Bulwark is good on AC20 and LRM20 boats (Breaching Shot works with Multi-Target).
Master Tactician + Bulwark is alright but Coolant Vent is better.

All other combos are less good but OK if you have Bulwark. If you don't have Bulwark might as well retire your mechwarrior unless you're doing an intentional challenge run.

There are some ++ ones that are -heat and +damage (it puts them at like 18 heat for 40-45 damage IIRC?) which are pretty common in black markets and aren't bad for 2 tons. It almost makes me want to get in good with the pirate faction for black market discounts.

Master tac just feels good when you have 1 heavy and the rest mediums or 1 assault and the rest heavies. My commander usually takes it for ~role playing~ as much as anything.

All of the original LosTech stuff got a bit of a boost. Reduced heat from before and typically +5/+10 damage depending on the weapon.

For example the ER LL is now 45 damage for 25 heat while it used to be 40/40. The LPL is now 55/30 where it used to be 45/40. There's a LPL++ that's 65/30 (and 1 ton lighter)
