I discovered this farce around the infamous Christmas stream where Croberts struggled to play the game he apparently was all in on. I think it’s high time we direct Greenpeace and PETA in his direction; this amount of whaling must be breaking some international treaties.

We may or may not be reading too much into Crobbers performance, but his closing keynote definitely had some very different vibes than usual. Just compare it to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuDj5v81Nd0&t=3647s Maybe this year was the first time that he was presenting sober, and the cold harsh reality of the janky shitpile that is SC was staring him in the face.

You can downgrade, by way of melting the ships for store credit and then buying something new, it's just a stupidly convoluted process that takes place in a separate part of the website from their ship upgrader thing. I think maybe you can't melt the Mustang Omega cause it came from an AMD code but you should be able to get ~150 in store credit for the Super Hornet if you actually want to lol.

Why does nobody mention land claims to Cymelion and Dolvak? Clearest example of scope creep that appears to have completely fallen by the wayside for the past two years. I mean they do the shutting the eyes really tight thing and claiming that they can’t see, which feeds entirely into their sunk cost/shilling, but poo poo, they’re falling behind on the basic deliverables, let alone all the whizzy stuff they’ve been buying every year.

It gets joked about a lot here that no AAA title can compare with dreams.txt, but to see it so lovingly rendered is amazing. It's so hard to believe, amidst the comedy of Bagman and hilarious demos, that people are so deeply emotionally invested that they've quite literally substituted their imaginations for reality. It's funny, but a sad kind of funny, and I guess that feeling is Star Citizen.

It obviously looks good, but that's about it. What I dont get is how terrible the gameplay is compared to the keynote just a year before. Did they break everything? Did the people who created the keynote demos before left the company?

Taintrunner posted:What's been sticking out to me lately is how... "bad" the human models look. They've got this really creepy possessed-Ken-doll look to them. From what I've looked at, they are actually fairly solid, with two exceptions - mouth and eyes. Mouths are really hard to do right, because people usually keep most of their teeth hidden, and similarly, most people close their eyes more than you'd imagine them to do. But that goes directly against the main rule of computer rendering safety rule - keep everything apart so that it doesn't clip. This leads to unnaturaly wide open eyes and mouths. And while CI seems to have partially solved the former (like HL2 years ago), the latter still seems to be a problem in these screens - and the underlying problem is of course we have some instincts, and the instinct for "they are showing teeth, but aren't smiling" is fear / aggression. Of course this is a (somewhat) minor problem with prerendered motion capture with professionals. It turns into HUGE problem once you put players in seat with wonky cams for $5 - see Robbaz's videos for excellent examples of that.

I can see where maybe the art direction is off-putting to folks but to me that looks way less upsetting than the Old Man Mark Hamill stuff CIG was showing off a while ago.

The game is buying ships, they know about the sales. I'm not sure this is true; I don't think there's enough sucker money to keep this afloat. They really are caught in a trap of their own creation. When early donations were hot and heavy, they set up a pattern of spending that they can't scale back from now without looking like they're failing. Yet the current burn rate is unsustainable, which is why they needed outside investment. And regardless of the Reddit peanut gallery's expert financial opinions, CIG has no actual "valuation," because they have no product - just 8 years of technical debt and hundreds of thousands of "IOUs" to backers. They've already been paid for the "product," delivered nothing, and nobody else cares or will ever care. If the Calder's investment was the only thing keeping CIG afloat, and I think this likely, then they can cash their chips in at any time, ending the company instantly. That could happen this year, next year, by 3:00 PM today, or never. The ball is entirely in the investor's court. Of course it could theoretically go on forever, assuming that CIG continues to find outside investment every year or two to the tune of $50 million or so. I would agree there are that many stupid millionaires world wide for that to happen. But I don't think CIG's optics lately make that likely.

A Plague Tale too has amazing character visuals, but all of them are not perfect. What JFO especially does best is skin shading so you don't end up with almost unlit albedo hands like in that Star Citizen video. It's very good and I don't really see the need to poo poo over JFO It's well done technically.

On a more serious note, they'll have quite the arc for extending more lines of credit to keep the fumes burning for a while, and I wouldn't discount the weirdly consistent money-making ability they have with people.
