They don’t. They just do more damage through the shield. This is honestly the first Pokémon campaign I've beaten where I've felt "this needs an enhanced edition ASAP", and it has nothing to do with what Pokémon are or are not in the game.

It feels like it's missing like 50% of its routes, 30% of its trainer battles, and 70% of its dungeons. And sadly I don't even know how an enhanced edition would fix this - might be best to skip right past it into the next remake or a whole new gen.

I had a lot of fun with it but I'm only now seeing a lot of the shortcuts they took now that I've beaten it. I'm starting to wonder how much the inclusion of the wild area actually cost us. While a fun inclusion when taken at face value I wonder if it's not a bigger liability than we think. It's not a suitable replacement for everything that was cut or just didn't get finished.

Yeah, the Wild Area resulted in the removal or simplification of many standard routes and dungeons. The Wild Area itself is very bland feeling, offers an inconsistent rotating Pokémon selection and has exactly one trainer battle, so that is a problem. The campaign requires you to only go there twice so that's a lot of content and pacing that's purely optional.

Yeah the thought came to me as I was going through the routes again from the beginning looking for items I missed with the surf bike. I didn't think about how weird it was when the game shepherded you to the train stations between gym challenges, but on second glance it's really surprising how many of these towns are dead ends - all presumably to save dev resources on routes in between towns. Like, they could have just added a narrow corridor or two with a few trainer battles. It wouldn't have been ideal but it would have made a difference.

Having an issue where Pokemon automatically disconnects my switch from the internet and connects it to local y-comm upon startup, halting game downloads. And when I connect to the internet in-game, it still won't let me download anything while playing because the game is using the internet connection. Is there a way around this?

Nope! I was completely unable to download a different game on my switch if Pokemon was running. The second I closed Pokemon it worked again. I never figured out a work around for it.

I finished catching all Gigantamax pokes thus I consider I finished this game, so here's my opinion on it.

I enjoyed the game. Yet wherever I looked the game felt incomplete. Whenever I came across something and thought "oh this is cool" 20 minutes later I'd end up being dissapointed when I found out that was just it.

The Wild Area is pretty small, for all the fuss the promotional trailers made about it it's just 3 general areas: start, bridge, end, and aside from the Pokemons it's completely barren. No trainers, no events, nothing. The wild Pokemon don't even interact with each other. Here was an opportunity to grab some of those dex entries and have, for example (since I know they are not in the game), a Zangoose chasing or fighting a Seviper and upon interaction you are tossed into a double battle, or a herd of Tauros running around that throws you into a gen 6's horde battle.

Aside from the Wild Area, there were too few routes, dungeons, trainers and locations. Heck there was no spooky forest/ghost house nor volcano.

Gigantamax sounded fun as a spiritual succesor to Mega Evolutions. Then it turns out the only Pokemons that can Gigantamax are those that you catch already possesing that ability, tossing away the concept of "raising a pokemon and forming a bond with it" that the franchise hammered your head with. You caught a level 8 Ghastly, trained it till it evolved into Haunter then had a friend trade you back to evolve it into Gengar? Well, too bad, better toss that chump into the box because you're gonna have to catch a brand new Gengar if you want the Gigantamax. Which is in turn another problem, Gigantamax pokemon become available really late in the game (same problem GS and SuMo had of making the cool new thing inaccesible till the game is almost over), have insanely low spawn rates, and if you are not the host you have an insanely low chance of catching them. Heck, you can't even breed the ability down in case you want to move your Pokemon over to Home when it comes out and restart the game with a brand new team.

The story feels completely phoned in, as if they were crossing points from a check list of standard Pokemon plot beats, to the point that it almost felt that they realised "woops we forgot about the legendaries!" and interrupted the tournament. Someone on this thread said that the game would have worked a lot better as a tournament story instead of the usual "legendary pokemon about to destroy time/space" crap, and I gotta say I agree with it. Speaking of the "Tournament", call me old fashioned, but I don't like this trend that started with SuMo of refighting the Gym Leaders instead of having a proper Elite Four. It reeks of "4 less NPCs to design" when put alongside all the other cuts and shortcuts this game took.

Some QoL improvements were introduced, but then they removed a whole bunch of others. There's no berry farm, no egg hatchery and while cute, the camping feature feels pretty barren when compared to SuMo's grooming or XY/ORAS actually having minigames to play with your Pokemon. The cost of Battle Tower items was reduced, but they removed streaks meaning after you get to Max rank you'll only be getting 2 BP per fight, not to mention the fact that since the opponent won't dynamax (with the exception of Leon) but you can, the Battle Tower ends up being piss easy, even with the rental teams.

The Postgame hits a new low in this game after USUMO picked up SuMo's slack with the Rainbow Rocket plot. A lot of padding out repeating the gym cycle and a bare thin plot whose antagonist you only hate for how ridiculous their designs are.

On the graphics department, the game looks good when compared to previous Pokemon games, but it's not on level with other Switch games. Still, despite this being the main focus of people's criticism since the reveal trailers, I consider this to be the least of the problems, and in fact I hate that this together with dexit got so much attention cause it distracts from the actual problems this game has.

If there's a 3rd version release for these games I'd probably skip them since there's no way to address these problems without a complete overhaul.

Overall a real shame since to me this gen has the most amount of cool Pokemon designs, yet there's barely any game to play.

If I remember correctly, the Switch turns off background downloading while playing games with a multiplayer component, so you don't accidentally become That Player in Splatoon 2. Pokemon SwSh is most likely flagged as multiplayer so it automatically shuts down DLs on the OS level.

I agree with a lot of your points, but I gotta disagree with this one. The gym leader tournament is way more fun than an Elite Four and should be the standard moving forward. It lets you get more out of characters you already know and makes more sense than just four weirdos that the player interacts with exactly once at the end of the game and then never again.

This would be fine in a game where the gym leaders had character or did something in the plot but I'd rather have 4 fun weirdo designs that cover 4.more.type.specialists than seeing someone who had 3 lines previously again.

The actual game does seem wildly... simpler compared to other pokemon games in terms of what they did with routes, yeah.

Also I think the real travesty of this gen was reintroducing non-reusable TMs after they made TMs re-usable and then moving most of the useful ones to the non-reusable ones. What sadist made that decision?!
