Accepting 'cis' as a valid term requires acknowledging trans people exist. That is unacceptable to them. It's not exactly rocket science.

I mean, I'm still in favour of responding to "what is cis it must be a slur" with "I guess you haven't been in a science classroom ever huh" because cis/trans is just the most basic of organic chemistry terms.

And they certainly didn't originate with chemistry. "Cis-" is a Latin prefix meaning "on this side of". It's the opposite of "trans-", which just means "on the other side of". Both have turned up in many places over the thousands of years they've been in use. Transjordan is the land on the other (east) side of the Jordan river. "Cisalpine" means to be to the south (Roman) side of the Alps. Cislunar space is the area inside the orbit of the Moon. Et cetera, et cetera.

There were Mexican Revolution war heroes that were transmen. They used the war as an excuse to transition (not medically because it was the 1900's, but socially). One of them even married a lady and was respected in his little village*. Of course his family shat on him when he died and invented a story of how he considered himself always "a woman" because god and transphobic crap.

Oh man last time I looked at it Elagabalus's wikipedia page was a terrible battleground of bad edits and citations by people who really really want Elagabalus to be trans and people who really really don't want Elagabalus to be trans, to the extent that they were fighting over English pronouns for someone who lived centuries before any of those pronouns even existed.

Like, fine, I get that you don't want historical trans erasure, but if you're going to respect Elagabalus's self-identification, you need to make sacrifices to him as the incarnation of the Syrian sun god Sol Invictus.

Also of all of the Emperors to get obstinately obsessed about defending who picks Elagabalus.

It’s their word, and only old white dudes should be able to say it. We should refer to it simply as the b-word.

Not just pronouns, but any attempt to claim that historical figures are LGBT with limited evidence are necessarily flawed because they come from a very modern view. Our current ideas of gender and sexuality come from no later than the Victorian period and people thousands of years in the past wouldn’t be guaranteed to fit neatly into our boxes or understand all of what they mean. Like imagine trying to figure out if a Spartan could be conceivably classified as “gay” by modern understanding, jokes to piss off Molon Labe guys notwithstanding.

The cis lesbian did cancel the second date in the last minute without elaborating and then cut contact with the trans girl. So I don't think she gave her honest opinion in the newspaper interview.

Is there a practical approach to trans people who aren't openly trans when it comes to online dating? Keeping it secret and letting the other person find out later on seems like a pretty terrible way to do it.

It's a regular feature they run (weekly?) Sometimes it's a straight couple, sometimes a gay couple. I can see how it could seem like an exploitative newspaper stunt without that context but the Guardian does have a whole dating site and people write in to sign up to the Blind Date column. It's just a dull little bit of fluff in the lifestyle pages that's occasionally entertaining if the date was a disaster but otherwise it's literally inoffensive filler. I don't even think it's the first time they've had a cis woman/trans woman lesbian couple, iirc! Just terfs wilding out over nothing, as per.

I feel awful for both women involved, they just wanted to go on a blind date, they had a nice evening and plan to meet again, and now a bunch of hateful scummers are blowing up this completely benign non-event.

Edit: oh I guess they didn't end up meeting up again but that's also not a big deal, it's a blind date not a wedding.
