The opening sequence prepared me for something classy, with the old-timey paper cutout puppets.

Then it barfed Hot Topic until I gave up.

I liked the pilot despite the fact that it is absolutely like what Ugly Americans would have been if everybody working on that show was an unabashed furry. I’m not expecting groundbreaking storytelling, I’m expecting dick jokes and sparkledogs and a Disney Princess singing about why cannibalism just isn’t okay.

But I’m now especially excited to see the Helluva Boss shorts, thanks to Richard Horvitz being in them.

Just watched it. I quite liked Hazbin, but i second concerns about where its going. There's no way they could keep that quality of animation and background detail up for a whole season, and its totally unclear what an average show would even be about. They don't get a single sinner to check in! It's all setup, like if Stargate ended with 'Hey we got the Stargate working! :D' instead of anyone stepping through it.

The Good Place kind of screws them too, imo. Even reading the premise of Hazbin made me immediately pondering the (blatant, upfront) corrupt incentives.

Also whats up with Vaggie, why is she in hell, all she ever does is be supportive and get angry at people wot who deserve it.

Based on her one floating X eye and halberd I just assumed she was a fallen angel. (She was probably cast down because of her terrible name.)

The angels are portrayed as horrible creatures through the eyes of the characters so a subversive look at the idea of heaven wouldn't surprise me. Plus the creator's previous work, IIRC, portrayed the Christian cosmology as being unjust and corrupt. So the cosmology of Hazbin being somewhat unfair.

I mean it seems like a lot of bad people ended up in hell but there's room in this story to explore injustices in afterlife judgment.

As long as we're talking about Hazbin Hotel, here's an animation by one of its composers: Little Runmo

It's another "family-friendly platformer game has a dark secret" kind of deal, but the execution is strange and confounding enough that I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I’m fully expecting there to be at least one successful redemption, possibly even Angel Dust himself, and the Exorcist Angels not caring at all and trying to slaughter everyone anyway.

I'm not surprised that Helluva Boss is going over better on people who didn't like Hazbin Hotel. It's more straightforward so it moves at a click and has more time for comedic character interactions. I was a little surprised with how dark the comedy got especially since Hazbin Hotel's portrayal of Hell and the evil people who exist in it was restrained whereas Helluva Boss was like, what the heck let's murder a kid!

I love Blitzo's personality. He's diabolical and amoral but not uncaring for people he likes. The performance, of course, is great. In fact Blitzo's performance might be better than anything else, from Helluva Boss or Hazbin.

Hazbin definitely feels more like a pilot that's setting up for a long show with character arcs, while Helluva feels like a collection of shorts where no one will learn anything and will go right back to doing the same poo poo every episode, Looney Tunes-esque.

Hazbin wanted to squeeze a whole lot into just over 30 minutes. It's a show about big ideas, so there's a lot to explain in the pilot. Plus... it wanted to introduce a big handful of characters, so each one needs their screentime. PLUS... three musical numbers.

Hazbin Hotel looks neat and from looking into stuff yesterday night and again from stuff others have posted, it feels like a whole lot of the stuff about the creator is out of context twitter fuel, it also doesn't help that one of the first links that repeatedly came up in some of the searching was kiwifarms garbage and then seeing that same poo poo be posted by twitter people as damning indictments, while never mentioning the creator addressing these things sometimes multiple times or noting that some of the stuff is from like 6-7 years ago and similar.

Yardbomb posted:

Honestly part of why I'm really leery on this stuff is again, so I'm trying to find source on the claims about the creator once again, some of the very first results are a 4chan archive, encyclopedia dramatica, kiwifarms and then other times when I find people actually trying to expound on these things, I find stuff like "Both of the characters from her comic are of age. The "girl" (who is actually a boy) is 18 and the teacher is 19 (and also happens to be snake human hybrid thing wtf vivzie)." and I start to think that some of this is channer word of mouth poo poo that mutated because a queer/lady/furry creator made weird things when they were younger. If I'm wrong then okay, but a lot of the "OH MAN THEY'RE A PEDO BESTIALITY etc. WEIRDO" sources are coming from places I'm not really immediately leaping to trust on their judgement.

Really wish the furry vibes weren't so strong in Hazbin/Helluva. I just watched Hulluva Boss last night, and it seemed like a decent little show... but ugh, that goddamn furry blatant self-insert OC character. The creator also seems to enjoy leaning pretty heavily on the different eye deal thing. Heterochromia's pretty rare, so it's kinda jarring when there are so many characters with it.

I don't think I've ever heard Richard Horvitz swear before, so that was kinda neat

I mean yeah it would be nice but they are both created by someone who is known for her furry art. I think that’s another reason I like HB better, because the only character that really screams “fursona” is Loona. Even Stolas is just a tarted up version of the Goetic demon. Meanwhile pretty much every character on HH is someone’s fursona including lots of the background demons.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Much like how you pretty much are never going to find an experienced artist of any talent who hasn't drawn porn, you're not going to get far looking for cartoon artists who haven't drawn furries. It's a running joke with porn artists that when they disappear without warning leaving everyone hanging it usually means they've gotten a job.

the banter in HB is still really bad especially the "let's bleep every other word" gag. there were a couple of good sight gags and the cinematography was a lot less of a mess

but my main thing this time is what was with the cutaway montages. there were two of them and both of them were multiple scenes long and i wasn't sure if the show was trapped in a recursive cutaway for a while. if i was animation supervisor i would have suggested having running continuous music throughout each montage so that the viewer knows they're still in one

also like.. plot elements in the first cutaway were also plot relevant to the general story? my roommate thought that suddenly it became a trailer for theoretical future episodes. but then the kid returns... and... he was the target of.... someone?? was it the guy talking about global warming?? if not, who was the client... the newgroundsiness really eminated off of this one

(to be fair we sometimes talked over it so maybe i missed a plot detail that got burped out along with a bunch of maddox/seanbaby-era vulgarity)

The incessant bleeping in that one scene was done for comedic purposes to show how Stolas is such an intensely perverse creep that he even scares Blitzo. I thought that joke landed pretty well. The global warming comment had nothing to do with the kid.

There’s also something to be said about the thematic idea that demons did sinful inhuman acts in life and so are stripped of their physical humanity in the afterlife. I also think the furry complaint is weird because it’s just character designs to create more vibrant and interesting backgrounds. The most excessive “fursona” design is probably Husk, and he’s a grumpy drunk who sounds like he hates everyone.

Loona also counts but she’s positively tame in comparison what with her basically just being a wolf girl.

Anyway I like both so far and am interested in seeing more.

DoubleCakes
Jan 14, 2015

The furry complaint is weird because there's a big difference between Loona, who's very much a furry's idea of a furry, and Alastor, who's just a human with some horns.

Even Husk who's very much an anthropomorphic animal, is just a cute humanoid cat thing.

SlothfulCobra

Honestly, I'm more bugged by the abstract pointy blob people than the animal people, although the juxtoposition of furries with psuedo-animal anatomy next to pointy blob people with no anatomy highlights the weirdness of each. I'm not really clear on how many of these people are born demons and how many are dead humans who somehow have weird funky souls for some reason. Or if their mortal existence has any bearing on their afterlife at all.

Like I know the reason it's hell is because they want to have an excuse to do a bunch of jokes off of how superbad all the characters are, but I keep on coming back to the weird implications of their worldbuilding or lack thereof. And if they want to riff a bunch on everything being terrible, how long does that joke last before everything bad dissolves into a monotony of terribleness?

It’s this, this is the furry complaint. They’re not just people with animal features, some of them are sparkledogs. Including Husk, somehow.

I think pretty much everybody introduced in Hazbin is a damned mortal soul (Charlie and Vaggie excluded) and the cast of Helluva are all indigenous (maybe not Loona?).

Everyone but Charlie is a damned mortal in Hazbin, only Loona is a damned mortal in Helluva of the main cast. The other people working at I.M.P are actually straight up Imps, weak beings born from the energies of hell.

Vaggie is actually kind of odd, she’s meant to be a Moth Demon but I’ll be damned as to how that’s meant to be observed in her design.

Charlie and Lucifer as I’ve mentioned previously are kind of meant to be China/Porcelain Doll people.

The main reason I think Adult Swim is in trouble is because aside from Rick and Morty and Venture Bros they don't have that many popular shows. And it looks especially not great since they're going to lose Family Guy and Bob's Burgers reruns to FXX due to the Disney buyout. If The Boondocks don't come to Adult Swim, they might not have that many shows to prop them up.

And, from what was said, they torpedoed at least one popular show they had:

On why “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” is coming to an end:

Maiellaro: “That’s a good question. We have a few answers for that.”

Willis: “Yeah, Adult Swim doesn’t like money.”

Maiellaro: “They got tired of the trucks pulling up and dumping it on the loading dock. It wasn’t our decision. We would’ve obviously kept making it because we like it. They don’t.”

Willis: “We don’t own it, so any talk would happen with the owners of the show.”
