as someone just observing the discourse here i think the problem, is that people who want "sex person" to be their personality, have not yet evolved language to discuss sex that is not cringe, and there is an obviously funny clash between wanting to be a sexer while being a nerdlet + using cringe language to try to be a cool sexer while sitting on cakes. my prescription would be a loving consensual relationship with a hot person, until sexers stop vibrating with drunk aunt energy and grow up a little.

Corky Romanovsky posted:Anyone have a rundown of actual implementation of a wealth tax? To actually have a reduction in money supply, the payments would necessarily have to be cash (or the government would have to liquidate the surrendered asset). Are there enough people wanting to buy stock, and have the funds for it? This is the major hang-up my Trump loving dad has with Bernie, otherwise he wants to see health execs drawn and quartered. This is a confusing post. Why are you trying to reduce the money supply? Taxes are always in cash, the govt doesn't want to have to mess around auctioning off assets (and the payment of taxes in govt backed currency reinforces the value of the currency). If there aren't enough people willing and able to buy stock at the current price then the current price is wrong and needs to fall, everything is worth what people will pay for it. The big ??? about wealth taxes is how you value all the weird assets that the super-rich have. Art and real estate and stocks and all that poo poo, there's a lot of tricks they can play to be technically worth $0 at tax time and be ultra billionaires the rest of the time. Otherwise, once you've got them valued, you just send them a bill for X% of their value and they pay up or go to prison, like regular taxes.

Often Abbreviated posted:This is a confusing post. This is a confusing post. Taxes are how you reduce the money supply. It is how you (partially) offset government spending to manage the value of your currency. When people become criminals, often their assets are taken and sold to pay off their fines. As you said, there are games that are and can be played with valuation, say as collateral to secure a loan, or depreciation or whatever. Say most of your wealth is tied up in something where no market exists: a private company you founded or wood carvings you make but don't really sell, you'd be strongly encouraged to sell shares or surrender shares to the government who would then create the market for your business shares or your wood carvings or whatever. So like your net worth isn't known until there is an initial auction. Certain other taxes are withheld quarterly for like higher revenue self-incorporated people, so I suppose something like that could be done for a wealth tax as well. The wealthy may spontaneously self-regulate their sales or cash-on-hand to avoid flooding the market quarterly or whenever, and the government would probably stagger auctions if they go that route. You get people that say oppose M4A because government single payer would have no way to control prices or how often people go for treatment, but those are largely failures of the imagination. For example, Japan isn't single payer, and doesn't have an absolute price list, but they have a points system which adjusts payouts for location and other factors, as well as monitors for doctors bilking the system with extra tests or procedures. A failure of the imagination, resolved with an extant system elsewhere in the world. Are there similar fleshed out plans that headoff similar questions for the wealth tax? You know, like real world examples in other countries and/or general frameworks by accountants/economists? That would probably be received better than us here shooting the poop. I couldn't seem to find anything, and haven't yet gotten a response from Richard Wolff, Mark Blythe, or Matt Bruenig.

I'm still not sure what your questions are. Like the money reduction thing, yes the govt can take money out of circulation by taxing and then not spending. But that's independent of there being a wealth tax. They can do that with any taxation. It's purely a factor of how much they take in vs put out. Have you tried looking up "Wealth tax" on wiki? There's a bunch of countries that operate it in one form or another right now. Might be better to look there than tweeting big-name economists.

Antifada chat: I like them! They are a but awkward but their hearts are in the right place and they can be very informative. Sometimes they tend towards sex and drugs socialism, which might not be for everyone. The Matt episodes are great, and they did an episode on Gladio and Propaganda Due that I enjoyed. Also, I know Molly Crabapple is not particularly welcome in this subforum but the episode where she was on to talk about Puerto Rico booting out governor Rosselló is legit better than 99% of the English-language reporting on the matter.
