The Bayreuth festival is currently streaming their production of Tannhauser. I find it a bit of a snooze fest but they set design/staging is loving wild and they are currently singing in a burger king with a prostitute, some clowns and a little person. https://www.br-klassik.de/concert/ausstrahlung-1816820.html

German opera staging is loving crazy. I saw the ring cycle when I lived in Hannover and it was buckwild. The Valkyrie was set in suburbia and the valkyries were on motorcycles, Wotan was jogging in shorts and t-shirt with a bunch of bodyguards and there were a ton of naked people... but I kept looking at the house Siegfried was in and there was this weird growth on the ceiling, and I was like... wtf is that, that kind of looks like... is that... a vagina?? And then Siegfried pulls the sword from it and all this green goop falls out on him and he's singing covered in this vagina goop and Act 1 ends and the whole theater loving erupts in boos and jeers like Rite of Spring style, it was nuts. Boheme was set on the moon, Rigoletto gave birth to his daughter... I've seen some poo poo, man. ahahah, found a picture

rofl Seems like the right fit for an audience that views itself as progressive and avant garde but really just wants to keep listening to the good old songs

If they're going to be running back the same stuff they gotta find ways to keep it interesting. If anything I'd be open to them messing with the score or plot even but I think that would be a bridge too far for the donor class. A few years back I saw Aida set in some dystopian Argentinian futuristic fascist state and Valkerie set in some 90s American-Psycho style wall street office/boiler room. I actually thought the Verdi one was really good and it was even better to see all the geezers who go for the spectacle and pomp being frustrated that they didn't play it straight.

Is it okay to post about modern/contemporary classical music in this thread? One of my favourite artists is Ludovico Einaudi, Una Mattina is one of my favourite albums of all time, and I just love how piano driven his stuff is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bvm9yG4cvs Also, the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, in particular his epic album "IBM 1401, A User's Manual" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBw_wSoVQrY Recently I heard a song used in a car commercial which sounded familiar, turns out it was "Arrival of The Birds" by The Cinematic Orchestra, originally written for the DisneyNature film "The Crimson Wing: Mystery of The Flamingos" but was also used in the last scene of the Stephen Hawking biography "The Theory of Everything" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqoANESQ4cQ I know this stuff isn't strictly classical but it is beautiful music I think so belongs here, also The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do some amazing performances of modern songs as well as movie tracks, such as Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know" and "This Land" from The Lion King https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK4liJjm5GA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwR_imHIN_4

https://twitter.com/BRSO/status/1201098608210317312 Mariss Jansons has died. Here's a video of his Concertgebouworkest playing Mahler's 2nd symphony. It's spectacular performance of one of my favourite pieces of music, and you can see some great examples of his conducting style in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHsFIv8VA7w

That's a bummer. I enjoy watching him conduct, very much in control but still expressive. He made some lovely comments about women conductors, which was a bummer coming from someone like him, but he did kind of walk it back.
