Isn't Utah notably favorable (by the standards of red states) towards refugees owing to the Mormons' particular history of having essentially been refugees for much of their existence? LDS is all kinds of repressive but they have their idiosyncrasies that set them apart from evangelicals, politically.

Helith posted:Biden the hand that feeds you bobjr posted:I've heard a lot of evangelical groups are bleeding women membership, but when best case scenario you're going to be treated as a lesser person than your husband no matter what that isn't surprising. If there's one thing that the internet and social media have done, it's open up people to a world that's larger to them and given them context for their own world, good or bad. Almost all churches are also tied to a location and people are moving into cities where that evangelical power is weaker. Almost all religion is basically parasitic on the labor of women. It uses them while also deeply disrespecting them as people and treating them as inferiors who need to be controlled. In some religions this is muted, but in others the disrespect and violence is open and ugly. In evangelical churches, if you're an unmarried woman of breeding age, they'll do all but dart and tag you. The pressure on the remaining women to stay in the church is immense and toxic. Anything to get them to stay. Any lever is pulled. Anything to stop the bleeding. The church is a social space and without women to hold it up, it will begin to collapse just as it is doing now. In a very cynical but very real way, it's a dating pool. If that pool shrinks, the men will leave along with the women. But yes, evangelical affiliation for young people is absolutely collapsing. I think that this has to do with a mix of a lack of time to induct children into religious traditions, religious turmoil, acceptance of hypocrisy and sin for political power from religious elite, the movement away from rural and suburban areas to cities, growing college education and access to the internet. I honestly think that if trends continue, evangelical Christianity, at least the white version, could reach a tipping point where they go from few teens and twenty-somethings to continue to the traditions to basically none or actually none, which we are increasingly seeing due to demographic collapse. The religious culture is rapidly unraveling and I think that the tipping point is where the congregation can't hold enough parishioners to sustain a culture at which point the culture collapses. The churches may still exist, but they'll increasingly become irrelevant hospices. Ice Phisherman fucked around with this message at 11:12 on Dec 1, 2019 |
