Educate. Agitate. Liberate.
Yeah, an employee is a stakeholder, even without stock options. No one cares about them beyond their necessity, which is why they bust unions and downsize.

The core driver of a whole lot of Boeing's decisions, including imo the move to Chicago, is the desire to break the unions. Moving to Chicago makes it easier for the execs to set up competing non-union facilities in alternate locations. A key driver to all of this is irrational but extreme management fury that blue collar workers were making decent money.

If you like that, wait until you see what happens in the auto industry during the next few years. Electrification will be a sea change; ICE motors are complicated and need plenty of accessories electric vehicles don't (always). No transmission, no oil pump, no ignition, etc. All those supplier facilities in the American South could go bye-bye, that would not be fun. What would the people who work for Bosch or ZF do if the work evaporated?

I, for one, welcome our new Siemens-Yutani overlords.

A small part of me relishes the thought of all the Mech Engineers, who have worked at the same auto supply company for the last 20 years and love to post online about how the reason Millennials can't get well-paying jobs is because they all have poo poo work ethic and chose poo poo college degrees, suddenly have to re-enter the job market. But then I also think of the vast swathes of line workers, technicians, and mechanics that are going to see their jobs evaporate and I'm just depressed again.

That's more notice than I got flying to LAX with them one time. I *thankfully* woke up early enough to see a nondescript email sitting in my inbox, not even done up in Alaska's website livery or even addressed clearly telling me my flight was canceled *the day of*. I called them as soon as their customer service line opened up and was able to shoehorn myself onto a middle-seat on a United flight (on their dime), and (after the fact) even got them to reimburse me for the +$99 upcharge into United's "not as terrible as our regular economy but still pretty lovely" premium economy seat, the Lyft ride cost, *and* for the Gogo day pass I'd bought for the flight.

So...it could be worse.

Plane filled with wrong fuel before crash that killed Tampa plastic surgeon

quote:

An employee at the Kokomo facility later told investigators that as Greenwald was approaching the airport in the Aerostar, the employee asked him if he wanted jet fuel, and Greenwald said “yes.” The employee, who is not named in the report, told investigators he asked because the Aerostar looked like a jet airplane, according to the report.

When Greenwald arrived, the employee parked the jet fuel truck in front of the Aerostar while Greenwald was still inside. The truck was marked with “JET A” on the left, right and rear sides.

“The employee said that he asked the pilot again if he wanted jet fuel, and the pilot said, ‘yes,’ ” the report says.

Jet fuel nozzles are shaped differently from nozzles for standard aviation fuel but the employee told investigators he was able to fill the Aerostar by positioning the nozzle at certain angles. The employee said he initially spilled about a gallon of fuel during refueling and “adjusted his technique so subsequent fuel spillage was minimal,” the report says.

The incompatible nozzle that this idiot fueler circumvented was invented as a result of literally this exact set of accident circumstances. Bob Hoover, aerobatic pilot extraordinaire, survived the double engine failure that resulted when a ground crewman assumed his plane was a turboprop and filled it with jet fuel, and he set out to develop a jet fuel nozzle that could not physically be used to fuel a piston-engined plane. They are now required nearly everywhere that has any aviation regulations at all.

I suppose that line about inventing a better idiot still rings true
