If you can pick off a GK or even two, then you can just feed one or two guys to them for the last couple turns. If you charge in, they can't charge out to get to anyone important, and if they happen to not kill someone in CC, you can fall back and leave them stranded in the open.

AM do have to play somewhat defensively because guardsmen are weak and have terrible basic guns, but you can get a lot of them on the board, and if you're bringing several plasma and flamer and melta weapons of your own it's not so bad. GK are generally pretty weak on objectives due to the lack of numbers, though the second psyker power does help them a lot now.

Yeah I think the problem was that really I was playing a shite Kill Team list. I know it wasn't competitive but I guess I didn't appreciate how uncompetitive guardsmen with lasguns really are. Like in 40K they are obviously poo poo but you take 40 of them and suddenly they become good. With this the negatives to hit are so harsh, and then your gun is so weak, they are basically only good for standing on objectives. Loading up on plasma guns seems to be the only way to ensure that you can trade with something else.

I get that the Guard will always be defensive, or at least lean towards it, due to the fact it's a shooting army/team, but like even the Deathwatch kill team my friend took seems to benefit from hiding out of sight until either a) you jump out and kill everything with alpha strikes, b) your opponent runs towards you, or c) you run to objectives.

Weirdly my complaint that it's too hard to do anything seems to be my friend's complaint about 40K. He kept hitting my valkyrie and I made the saves, and I did get lucky/use stratgems with the Scions to pass a lot of 4+/3+ saves, but he was saying he didn't like the fact you shoot a bunch and nothing dies. I guess it's because his KT is like three pathfinders with rail rifles and a stealth suit, so mostly what they shoot at dies when it gets hit.

I run all Scions in most of my Kill team games and while certainly "off meta" the Hot Shot las guns have been able to do some work for me (but that 18" range hurts), but I'll agree with you that regular guardsmen are straight up trash.

Yeah, cover in Kill Team is good, but also very easy to get, as long as even a little of a model has cover you get the -1 to be hit and -1 to any injury rolls you suffer. Those are really important. Conversely, yeah, and multiple damage weapons like Rail Rifles are very very good because you get the extra injury dice to roll which makes getting those high injury roll numbers a lot easier.

Moving up the field while shooting with units like GK or DW is usually necessary because it's really hard to dig models out of cover, they're pretty durable and can usually be in cover while moving up anyway, and you need their small numbers to be in position to get objectives.

It sounds like the Tau and GK players are playing with pretty 'hard' lists, so you probably do need to take something closer to the meta build. The 8 plasma build is probably overkill, but 2-3 plus some flamers, plus a bunch of bodies to throw into any assault specialists and to stand on objectives should help you out a bunch.

Not sure which regiment bonus you're taking too, but the Valhallan one is really good if you're having problems with morale, or the Cadian one if you're going all in on plasma and think you can set up good sight lines generally.

The Tallarn one is pretty great too as it allows you to maneuver around without penalty.

Did the Kill Team annual not go out for pre-review like CA 2019 did? I am reminded by the discussion on this page about how good plasma guns are, and am waiting for the impending price cost hike.

Bob Wins

Word on the street is that the Kill Team annual doesn't have any (or very little) point adjustments and instead is just a consolidation of points from across the different books and some new missions. From what I remember hearing Chaos gets some new heavy weapons, Death Denied for space marines went up to 3 CP and some other factions get some new tactics, but I think that's about it.

I eyeballed the points in the below article, and it didn't look like they were adjusted for SM. Honestly, didn't look like anything SM was adjusted points-wise.

Jesus we weren't even remembering to add -1 to injury rolls for being in cover.

I mean I wrote the GK team so I can't really complain about that, the DW list was I think basically what you want in the meta (it's like a frag cannon, a heavy bolter with a flamer, and then three dudes of some sort). I was playing Valhallan because I bought some old school valhallan models to make a Commissar Cain kill team, but to be honest I'll probably play Cadian just to be WYSIWYG.

I think my attitude has always been if you play with a list that is as good as you can write, it only makes sense for both players to do that, so if the others are going to be using "good" lists, I am just going to do the same. Not out of spite or anything,it's just not really a good game when someone is bringing a "good" list and someone brings a list that isn't as good as they can write it.

Kill Team is designed around having pretty tuned lists in any case; the roster system means you know who your opponent is and what the mission is before you choose your list. The game expects you to have a TAC roster but not a TAC team on the board.

Playing with the roster and varying the missions (don't just keep playing the corebook ones) are pretty key to enjoying KT and are part of why I agree with your friend that it's more fun than 40K. I've been enjoying getting into 40K and playing with more toys, but I'd still rather play three games instead of one and hopefully have everyone walk away with at least one good showing.

IG don't need an 8 plasma build, the new Blackstone Fortress models are very good against everything and give you a little more flexibility. Pious Vorne and Gotfret can both fight aggressively against Grey Knights, although you'd need to protect Vorne for a bit until she can shoot.
