Well surely these rich, educated foreigners who have been nice so far know better and wouldn't spread disinformation to vulnerable populations, and that's how we end up here.

They’ll target immigrant communities in the US, too. Minnesota’s measles outbreak of 2017 hit the Somali immigrant population harder than other groups because of the efforts of anti-vaxxers. https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/10/26/16552864/minnesotas-measles-outbreak-immigrants-anti-vaxxers Icon Of Sin fucked around with this message at 14:03 on Dec 3, 2019 |

I had to get the MMR shot last month because there was an outbreak nearby and my university emailed everybody either exemptions saying “hey it’s your choice but also you can’t come to campus if the outbreak spreads to here. We know most of you only have exemptions because you didn’t have time to find your records before registering (me)” Don’t have my childhood vaccination records and apparently at boot camp they don’t give you the full MMR, just Mumps/Rubella, and my blood tests were negative for measles antibodies. So either I never got the MMR as a kid and my mom never told me, or it didn’t take. So now I’m between the initial and booster of the MMR at the age of 31 so I don’t have to worry about being kept home from class.

I’d love to send all of the anti-vax wine mommy bloggers, sorry, vaccine risk aware merlot mother activists, to places where children die from easily preventable illnesses and where parents would and have killed people for the chance to vaccinate their kids. And also bring back drawing and quartering just for Andrew Wakefield.

I’m sure if you dug into the names of the people pushing anti-vax BS on the Somali population in Minnesota (from the link I posted earlier), you could probably draw a straight line to some real pieces of poo poo. I may take a crack at it later when I’m not at work, but I’m too cynical to think there wasn’t a link between the 2 there.

I've been digging a bit, mostly because today is a snow day and next semester I'm teaching my pseudoscience course again and we spend a few weeks on vaccines. I'm going to punch up the link between general conspiracy theories and transitioning into alt-right ideology this semester for the 1st time. Kelly Weill at Daily Beast digs a lot into this and I linked one of her articles on it in my last post. Anyways, looking into the Minnesota case they were backed by this group: https://canaryparty.org/about/ Largely run by a guy named Mark Blaxill, who writes a bunch of anti-vaxx books after one of his kids got autism. Previously he was some investment banker type. http://vaccinesafetycouncilminnesota.org/my-hanging-offense/ No real racist ties that I can see, but he did co-write a WSJ article in 1997 on making money off of the inner city: https://www.bcg.com/documents/file13301.pdf

Naturally because we live in Hellworld this means it can be used to target and abuse the already societally-abused, so it would have to have checks built in like "Nationalized, free vaccinations at mobile clinics we bring to you".

It's a dicey thing from a civil liberties perspective, ie "Do I trust our current government to implement and mandate a forced vaccination policy"? Hell no, because I don't trust that they wouldn't use it to do something else, or pawn off vaccine contracts to the lowest bidder and risk actual real vaccine complications. That said, just about everything up to the "mandatory at gunpoint" would be a good option from the standpoint of public health.
