edit: I understand where you're coming from, but the numbers don't stack up for poverty being a cause unless Samoa had a huge event in the last year I missed.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/30/there-are-no-words-samoa-buries-its-children-as-measles-outbreak-worsens

NZ just had their worst measles outbreak in 20 years.
Vaccination rates for measles in Fiji and American Samoa are comparatively higher.

quote:

The immunisation rates of babies have plummeted in recent years. Four years ago, roughly 85% of one-year-olds were vaccinated, in 2017 that dropped to 60%.

But since then the rate plummeted sharply, after a scandal that rocked Samoa in 2018, when two Samoan nurses administered MMR vaccines to babies who subsequently died. The nurses pleaded guilty to negligence causing manslaughter and were sentenced to five years in prison after it emerged that one of the nurses mixed the MMR vaccine powder with expired muscle relaxant anaesthetic instead of water for injection.

People lost trust in the government and in immunisation programs, meaning that by 2018, only 31% of children under five had been vaccinated.

quote:

The government’s best efforts to fight the epidemic are being challenged by online influencers peddling alternative “cures”. Vitamins and kangen water – alkalised water made using a Japanese machine – are both touted as cures.

Anti-vaxxers have spread their message online, including one – who is also a social media influencer and the wife of a Samoan rugby league player – who likened Samoa to Nazi Germany for its mandatory vaccination program.

Some families are opting for Samoan traditional healers who use remedies like tea leaves, which are effective in reducing fever, but can do little for the actual virus.

I get that much of the island nations are incredibly poor but vaccines are particularly cheap and well distributed compared to other medicines. The fact that they enjoyed a suitable vaccination rate up until now is indicative of that.

The ‘Making Informed Choices’ workshop has been created to foster transparency, arm us with groundbreaking information, liberate us from a fear-mongering culture and take back control of our family’s health.

This workshop is not about telling anyone what to do or what to think. The ‘Making Informed Choices’ workshop is about providing the FULL BUFFET of vaccine information so that we can feel empowered, informed and confident in our choices, whatever that choice may be.

Whether you believe in vaccines, you are completely against them or you are stuck in the grey area feeling unsure – this workshop is open to everyone. We can all agree that we want safety and good health for all children.

This workshop will also be a perfect opportunity to FIND YOUR TRIBE, connect with other like-minded people in a safe, non-judgemental environment and realise that you are not alone.

It's like the anti-gay stuff in Africa, westerners come in under the guise of doing charitable work, often even do things to legitimately help people, then slip in an undercurrent of "gay people should be executed" or "vaccines give you autism". Well surely these rich, educated foreigners who have been nice so far know better and wouldn't spread disinformation to vulnerable populations, and that's how we end up here.

They’ll target immigrant communities in the US, too. Minnesota’s measles outbreak of 2017 hit the Somali immigrant population harder than other groups because of the efforts of anti-vaxxers.

BANDAIDS DON'T FIX BULLET HOLES

I had to get the MMR shot last month because there was an outbreak nearby and my university emailed everybody either exemptions saying “hey it’s your choice but also you can’t come to campus if the outbreak spreads to here. We know most of you only have exemptions because you didn’t have time to find your records before registering (me)”

Don’t have my childhood vaccination records and apparently at boot camp they don’t give you the full MMR, just Mumps/Rubella, and my blood tests were negative for measles antibodies. So either I never got the MMR as a kid and my mom never told me, or it didn’t take.

So now I’m between the initial and booster of the MMR at the age of 31 so I don’t have to worry about being kept home from class.

Not quite but:

https://www.thedailybeast.com/anti-vaxxers-are-cozying-up-to-the-far-right-online

quote:

Often, sometimes multiple times a day, users in an anti-vaccination Facebook group post a link to a 2017 article about vaccine laws in Sweden.

“Nice!” one group member captioned the article last week.

“Amazing,” “interesting,” wrote two people who shared the article in the 150,000-member group on the same late January day.

The article wasn’t from a medical news source, though, or even another anti-vaccine group. It came from a white supremacist website, Red Ice.

The anti-vaxxer movement, comprised of people who falsely believe vaccines are dangerous, is ascendant. In 2019, the World Health Organization named “vaccine hesitancy” one of the top 10 threats to global health, the first time it made the list. The movement is credited with contributing to ongoing measles outbreaks worldwide, including an outbreak of approximately 70 people in Washington state. But that’s not all it’s spreading. Like other conspiracy movements, the anti-vaxxer movement has rubbed shoulders with the far right.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-anti-vaxxer-disease-is-now-a-republican-epidemic

quote:

The anti-vaxxer disease is now a Republican epidemic.

What was once the provenance of a few fringe weirdos—mostly on the loony left—has now migrated into the mainstream. At least three Republican candidates for governor—in Oklahoma, Oregon, and Connecticut—are now open skeptics of requiring vaccinations for school kids.

I've been digging a bit, mostly because today is a snow day and next semester I'm teaching my pseudoscience course again and we spend a few weeks on vaccines. I'm going to punch up the link between general conspiracy theories and transitioning into alt-right ideology this semester for the 1st time. Kelly Weill at Daily Beast digs a lot into this and I linked one of her articles on it in my last post.

Anyways, looking into the Minnesota case they were backed by this group: https://canaryparty.org/about/

Largely run by a guy named Mark Blaxill, who writes a bunch of anti-vaxx books after one of his kids got autism. Previously he was some investment banker type.

Financial punishments work real good from what I've read. It doesn't stop the full bore anti-vaxx cultists that are 100% on board the conspiracy theory train, but when it starts to hit the pocket book lots and lots of wishy washy 'hmmmm, maybe?' fence sitters make up their minds real quick.

Naturally because we live in Hellworld this means it can be used to target and abuse the already societally-abused, so it would have to have checks built in like "Nationalized, free vaccinations at mobile clinics we bring to you".

I won't argue with that.

It's a dicey thing from a civil liberties perspective, ie "Do I trust our current government to implement and mandate a forced vaccination policy"? Hell no, because I don't trust that they wouldn't use it to do something else, or pawn off vaccine contracts to the lowest bidder and risk actual real vaccine complications.

That said, just about everything up to the "mandatory at gunpoint" would be a good option from the standpoint of public health.

Read up on how he treated Sandra Locke who he was with for 14 years. He convinced her to have a couple abortions and have her tubes tied because he said kids wouldn't work with their lifestyle. He had two kids via affairs during that time. He wouldn't allow her to work with anyone else. When they finally broke up she showed up at a house she thought he'd given her to find the locks changed and all her stuff stacked up out front. Then he blacklisted her so she couldn't work.
