Not entirely related but did any of you hear about the synth tech who accidentally dosed himself with 50 year old acid a while back? https://mixmag.net/read/synth-technician-dosed-lsd-buchla-news Apparently the guy who made those synths was rumored to hide acid in them to enhance the performances, and someone finally found proof. quote:Since the incident, all traces of acid have been removed from the vintage Buchla.

When I was a tiny kid sitting on a bean sprout and eating my own poo, a system from six years ago was loving ancient (the Atari 2600) and considered literal garbage. The PS4 is still considered current by all normal people. Weird how the pace has both sped up and slowed down.

Plus, current systems have a bunch of behind the scenes OS stuff going on, from Friends/Voice Chat to Streaming and System Pause stuff. And that's before you get into any of the rumored backwards compatablility that's being hinted at for the next gen. 5-6 years is pretty good for people to not only recover from the initial investment price (like $4-500), but also for devs to start making those games that really squeeze every little bit of performance from a proven and documented platform. Hell (not taking into account the platform revisions that Nintendo did) the 3DS is heading into its 10th year and is all but dead. That's one hell of a lifespan.

Jerry Cotton posted:e: Or is the 3DS almost dead? I really don't know. The success of the Switch really changed the priorities of the devs at Nintendo and the 3D generation never really seemed to catch on anyway. It had a crazy run though. The PS4 architecture is different than the previous gen so it's easier to run 1-3 off of the emulator packages they sell on the PS Store (more lucrative, too). The PS3 can run PS1 games off the disc, though. It's one of those weird things you discover and then get reminded that they stripped out the PS2 backwards comp when they revised the models The guess is that the 5 will run 4 games natively, but I wouldn't be surprised of there was some $5 Disc to Digital thing where you just pay to install it/unlock it on your account or whatever. The Project Scarlet next Xbox thing is supposed to be able to run XBone games pretty easily, but MS has been promoting cross platform porting with their gamepass thing so who knows.

One of the things I think about is the fact that when I was a kid, time was experienced a lot differently. Nintendo was around forever to me, we probably got one in '86 and used it well beyond 95 when it was discontinued and we moved over to the Sega Genesis. Even if you were to factor in the Super Nintendo in 1991, 5 years is a long rear end time when you're the ages of 5-10 years old. Now that I'm old as gently caress, it feels like I just got a PS4, and that the XBOX 360 it replaced isn't really that old either. Jerry Cotton posted:All but means almost. There was no nostalgia for it until the late 1990s and it fell out of use immediately when home microcomputers got affordable/popular.

(Although I would say that, game-wise at least, the Commodore VIC-20 was dogshit as well but maybe I just never got to play the good game(s) )

But Pitfall II proves that even within those constraints you could make a decent game. Most companies and developers just didn't want to, because that required skill and time.

A Logic Named Joe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Logic_Named_Joe You got a logic in your house. It looks like a vision receiver used to, only it's got keys instead of dials and you punch the keys for what you wanna get. It's hooked in to the tank, which has the Carson Circuit all fixed up with relays. Say you punch in "Station SNAFU" on your Logic. Relays in the tank take over an' whatever vision-program SNAFU is telecastin' comes on your Logic's screen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V6NO_pvjeI

There was also a lot of crap, and I say this as someone who got ET for Christmas.

Fun fact: Steve Jobs created Breakout by rotating Pong 90 degrees. It's probably also why all the early Macs had a Breakout clone called Brickle

2600 Space Invaders has a bunch of fun co-op modes, Asteroids plays better than the arcade original, and Dragster is still great if you and a friend are both very drunk.

My family also had an Atari 2600, but we got it very late in its life. Around 1990/91 I think. Well into the Nintendo age. I remember my mother buying games for it at Sears. They still had it on display and racks of games for it. My favorites where River Raid, Taz, and Moon Raiders (Moon Attack?, I forgot... it was a almost space invaders like game). Never had Pitfall.

Late 70s I guess? Before we had a 2600 at home. There was something so peaceful about pong, the simplicity of it. The basic sounds (or maybe just sound).
