The internet I signed up with when I moved STILL hasn't delivered (long story won't bore you probably another 2 weeks) so yesterday afternoon I ordered a Three Home Broadband (doesn't need a phone line, 4G thingummy bob - Huwai B535 router which has 4 ethernet ports (because I want ethernet ports, they have another gadget that has Alexa but I think only 1 ethernet port if that). I signed for a 24 month contract at £22 per month and nothing up front. And the beauty is, if I were to move again, I could take it with me. (Ed: unlimited data). Anyway, it arrived half an hour ago and these are the speeds: Which is 10Mbps better on download than the superfast fibre I was getting in the old flat for £34pm - just 10m from an OpenReach cabinet from Plusnet! I'll still go ahead with the other one because it's a bit of a bargain - £13pm for 18 months for 38Mbps including the phone line as I like to have two separate providers. OwlFancier posted:This too which is why I wish the left had more efforts to reach people other than banging on their doors during the election. The Labour club closed down a year or two after I moved here, but it was a dingy little pub with the same three lifers sat staring into pints downstairs and a tiny function room upstairs with a badly leaking roof. The state of the two venues probably reflects the state of donations - Conservatives are rich bastards who look after their own, so their hall gets loads of donations, whereas Labour are trying to look after the poor who generally don't have the spare cash to donate. I mean there were also issues of mismanagement from the woman left to manage it solo while going through a messy divorce, the council trying to rezone that whole strip as a hotel, and the self-defeating, working-class conservative nature of the town's gammon population to take into account as well. But given that I try to keep up with the local party news, there is just no leftist social presence in town any more outside of a few small cliques who don't invite new people. I don't have the time or energy to fight that uphill battle and with my history of socialising I really don't think I'm the person to be leading the charge, but you're absolutely right, we need more leftist social events. As a side note, this is is why I like humanism even though I'm christian myself. I feel like there is a whole social aspect to weddings, baptisms, even holidays like easter and xmas which secular people miss out on. It's nice to have a social space you can just go to and know that the people there are primed to socialise and welcome new people (though this very much depends on the faith and sect in question). The social side of English churches is definitely something I want to see more of outside religious settings.

Similar here - the local CLP Labour place is a working men's club far from the town centre (and I'm on the opposite side of town from it) with little parking space and a distinctly 1970s aesthetic. Between that and every meeting being on Friday when I'm out having after work beers I basically never get to attend meetings even though I want to. The district party are close by but always meet at like 7:30 on Saturday and the same after work beers usually leave me in no mood to be up before midday.

On the internet it says James Hetfield is 6ft 2 but they did a secret gig at the Marquee once as a Wembley warmup and he's shorter than me (I was probably about 6ft in my boots) - unfortunately I was so shocked I patted him on the head and said 'god you're short'. Jeb! was spotted in 2015 standing on tip-toe to not appear shorter than Trump during one of the after-debate photos - he claimed he was trying to see his wife in the crowd (she's like 5'2") but most of us didn't buy him deciding that he needed to see his wife while the photo was taken. I think Trump is lying about even being 6'1" since Jens Stoltenberg is 6'1.3" and is clearly taller here:

Purple Prince posted:It's total BS. Neuroplasticity means your whole personality can flip to something different in the course of a few years, so why would politics be exempt from that? 20-30 is largely spent dealing with the 'realities' of work (i.e. a trickle down FYGM mentality from management that encourages people to behave like dicks to anyone below them) and generally entrenches things like crab bucket mentalities and the aforementioned FYGM mentalities towards subordinates. The older you get the worse your neuroplaticity gets. After 25 or 30, it gets worse, and trying to form new connections causes worse and worse stress, releases cortisol (which impairs movement of memory from short to long term) and generally sets off most of the 'this is bad' alarms your head has. This is why your nan gets so angry when you try to tell her how PDFs work, or why Trump gets so mad when you tell him he can't say [national stereotype] any more. You absolutely can fight it and learn new things after 21, but the older you get the more you have to consciously exert willpower over the process, and that's something most people won't be aware of or won't want to do. Even the process of consciously overcoming your biases is something you kind of have to learn either while young or by force (i.e. because you lost your job and got sanctioned and suddenly have no choice but to accept that the tories might be shits). * or penises if they're tories

So comrades, in gratitude to the kind words so many of you have offered I'd like to offer something a bit special to SA members only. A UKMT specific flavour- 'I'm Dreaming Of A Red Christmas'. Clotted cream fudge coloured the deepest red like the people's flag, topped with organic freeze dried strawberrys for a delicious combination of sweet and sharp flavours. Please request this specifically in your order email, as it won't be on the facebook page (trying to keep it mostly apolitical) and enjoy

Height doesn't matter, people, and it's unhealthy to propagate the idea that it does. I'm 5'7", so below the average male height, but I'm quite capable of holding my own among giants. In my experience the only people who make a thing about height are trying to boast and make others feel bad about something they can't change in a bid for social dominance*. I'm not accusing anyone ITT of that, but we've discussed appearancechat before and I think terms like 'manlet' are potentially bad for the self-esteem of people reading who have internalised some of society's lovely attitudes about appearance. If anything my scaled-down stature is convenient because I'm attracted to people taller than myself. And people the same size as and shorter than myself, but there's something about cuddling into a tall person *Yes, there is short man syndrome, but I think that's a product of society celebrating height to an unhealthy degree, because it makes some people feel they have to overcompensate for something they shouldn't be ashamed of.
