A big chunk of my graduating class was born in Mexico and we were required to read Ole Rølvaag's Giants in the Earth as part of our local history education. I'm lily white and I met relatives who were born in the old country. poo poo, there's a guy at my church who had surgery a couple years back and when he came out of anaesthesia, the nurse asked him to count to 10 to test him, and she about had a panic attack when he said "ett, två, tre, fyra, fem..." until she realized he was counting in Swedish, which he spoke at home until well into adulthood.
