As someone who grew up in rural Minnesota, it's loving bonkers to me that anyone would claim that the Twin Cities aren't Midwestern, or that being an immigrant is not quintessentially Midwestern. A big chunk of my graduating class was born in Mexico and we were required to read Ole Rølvaag's Giants in the Earth as part of our local history education. I'm lily white and I met relatives who were born in the old country.

poo poo, there's a guy at my church who had surgery a couple years back and when he came out of anaesthesia, the nurse asked him to count to 10 to test him, and she about had a panic attack when he said "ett, två, tre, fyra, fem..." until she realized he was counting in Swedish, which he spoke at home until well into adulthood.

After Trump's election and brexit and etc, it was fashionable in certain circles to wear a safety pin to indicate that you were a good white and POCs and LGBTs were safe to talk to you without fear and so forth. Then it became that you had to wear this $500 safety pin a Twitter poster was selling or you weren't allied enough. There were safety pin subscription boxes.

All of this predicated on the ironclad belief that no malefactors could understand or use any of this info.

Here's an quiz about whether you are virtuous enough to wear the pin.

even when I was a freshman in college in 2008 and meeting LGBT people for the first time I knew how insanely masturbatory it was to advertise yourself as an ally, but I guess the grift has to keep on going

remember back in the first 2016 Republican primary debate the moderators just straight up loving forgot John Kasich existed, so they introduced every other candidate in sequence, they all walked out onto the stage one at a time, and then they ended the introductions and just started the debate, with one podium empty and Kasich standing around awkwardly just off stage

Chris Christie had to be like 'what about Kasich? you forgot Kasich' two or three times before they finally gave him a belated introduction

I was explaining to a foreign friend that Trump believes that people are born with a finite amount of energy and that if you exercise you will use it up and found this incredible lead paragraph in the washington post

quote:

President Trump reportedly eschews exercise because he believes it drains the body’s “finite” energy resources, but experts say this argument is flawed because the human body actually becomes stronger with exercise.

In 2008, newly appointed CEO of Meryll Lynch, John Thain, commissioned an office renovation shortly after the company received TARP funds from a massive taxpayer bailout. It still ended up failing and was shoved down BoA's throat as part of a government instituted shotgun wedding.

Some of the things:

Area Rug $87,784
Mahogany Pedestal Table $25,713
19th Century Credenza $68,179
Pendant Light Furniture $19,751
4 Pairs of Curtains $28,091
Pair of Guest Chairs $87,784
George IV Chair $18,468
6 Wall Sconces $2,741
Parchment Waste Can $1,405
Roman Shade Fabric $10,967
Roman Shades $7,315
Coffee Table $5,852
Commode on Legs $35,115

The rug tied the office together.

same, but having super religious conservative parents and getting to watch them be even more uncomfortable than me throughout the entire process. they were torn between "this content is clearly pornographic and i don't want it on the tv" and "but it's the thing that is going to get that godless liberal bill clinton impeached, so i'll grudgingly suffer through it" and when he got off the hook they were so maaaaaaaaaaad. like i'm pretty sure they've been mad about that for the rest of their lives

my history teacher in 10th grade gave me a bad grade and a lovely note on a current events assignment. i was supposed to make some kind of interactive activity so it was like "welp, clinton's at it again, this time with a maid. use the following chart to find the third-world country with the lowest GDP so we can bomb it as a distraction"

lol remember how he came to an air force base expecting the military to defect en masse and let him in but instead they locked the gates so he just stood around on a highway interchange for like three hours and then left

also remember how he had a representative give soldiers at a nearby garrison a letter asking them to defect for the good of the country and they took the letter and lit it on fire
