I don't really listen to podcasts, though I'd like to at some point. It's an auditory overload thing (autism again!) I'm sure other people can recommend some.

I enjoyed the History of Rome podcast when I listened to it the first time quite a few years ago, although I bowed out during the later imperial period because I was getting a bit :psyduck: because I'm not anything like as familiar with it. But attempting a relisten a couple of years ago it kind of seemed a bit basic and credulous. I dunno. I didn't give it much of a chance the second time through. I could be wrong in that assessment.

Edit: 59 BC: the year of the consulships of Caesar and Bibulus. Wikipedia says:

quote:

Their partnership was contentious to the extent that Caesar arranged for Bibulus to be doused in feces in Rome's main forum on the eve of an important vote. After this Bibulus withdrew from public politics for the rest of his term.

Leading to wags calling it "the consulship of Julius and Caesar"

What about Labour? I think it's fair to say that Corbyn needs to stand down after this. If he looses another GE to this opposition then he's clearly just bad at getting elected. You can argue, correctly, that the media is biased against him, but he's also very bad at playing that game, etc.

Thoughts?

corbyn stands down, left maintains control of the labour party unless something seriously unlikely happens. keep up the fight and try not to spend too long lost to despair, a month or two tops.

I honestly don't know. That or something symbolic may have happened, but systematic salting of the earth absolutely did not.

The salting thing apparently did happen, but more symbolically - a line of salt was cast down the centre of the city. Also, pretty much everyone was put to the sword. Oh and military strategists have been jacking off over Hannibal's greatest victory for over 2,000 years and trying to recreate it themselves. The Schlieffen Plan was apparently based on Cannae but, like, WTF? How do you base a Europe-wide strategy on the tactics used in a single battle? Ms Adequate assures me that strategy and tactics are not the same thing ;)

Moving abroad is a luxury. Lucky for you if you can, but my hopes are "win the lottery" so woohoo.

As for what about Labour? Well why'd you care if you're loving off? But for those of us stuck here? To be honest I don't see the value in worrying about hypotheticals at this point, this is the leader we have for this campaign, just get the gently caress on with it. If you're worried about the result then get out and campaign. Knock on doors, phone bank, even just convince your friends & family, especially if they are in constituencies that Labour have a chance in. Donate to the campaign. Whatever you can do, do. The polling isn't worth worrying about. Just do the job, try to get Labour candidates elected and at the end of the day no matter what the result we can look back on the morning of the 13th December knowing that we could do no more. Then we can have the leadership conversation. Until then it's just pissing in the wind. Not even contemplating Labour losing. Far as I'm concerned, until the polls close & the exit poll is announced I am just assuming Labour will win every seat they are standing in because why the gently caress would you not vote for this manifesto?

Also, you've keep typing loose when you mean lose.

Tories are still the obvious favourites, hope is a lie and all that jazz, but a big lol if you're going to drive yourself into pre-emptively donning the sackcloth and wailing despairingly because a ComRes poll givers them a 10 point lead.

Outflanking the enemy and hitting his sides and rear is a manoeuvre that works regardless of scale. Admittedly it's a lot harder to do with bigger armies, but it was applied successfully on a strategic scale in WW2.
