I doubt it’s Sega making them but Tectoy has a legit relationship with Sega so it’s not like some Polystation situation.

Funnier, though, are the people trying to start a panic that somehow THE GAME PRESERVATION COMMUNITY IS IRREPARABLY HARMED BY THIS. (To head off any discussion, I agree that game preservation is an important thing, but I highly dobt that anyone doing anything other than being a game preservation fanboy was fooled by this)

As mentioned, Tectoy was officially licensed to sell, and then manufacture (after Sega had otherwise let it die) it in Brazil. There are even a few models that were released exclusively in Brazil by them, including ones that are pretty much what the NES Classic is (preloaded games, no cartridge support). So, they're legit, but not...from Sega legit, if that makes sense. I know they were still manufacturing them as of a few years ago, but I don't know if they still are.

To be fair, it was part of a multi-episode series, most of which focused on "Genuine bootleg" Famiclone/Dendy carts. The "BUY MY BOOK. BUY. MY. BOOK" part wasn't a significant part of the whole series. But yeah. I don't totally disagree with you, I guess.

There's a Russian YouTuber that did an entire series on it roughly a decade ago, with English subtitles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kne6AKyYUuM A console like this/multigame carts in general definitely have some sort of creepypasta potential in them though. Surprised nobody's tried to capitalize on that sooner tbh

"BUY MY BOOK" Can pretty accurately describe Arin Hansons entire life though. From Newgrounds to where he is right now, he's been pretty open about the fact that everything he makes is a creative attempt at gaining fame/influence. And after the Dream Daddy community tore into Ding Dong for saying anything bad about it, I just can't even stand to watch him anymore. That's when I couldn't just be like "Well almost all entertainers are like that so..." yeah most entertainers somehow manage to not make gaysploitation games that have communities that attack gay game developers lol

Soviet Jump Game is rooted in a real but niche bit of gaming history, even if it probably won't be entirely reliant on that. So why not embed the announcement in videos about that sort of game, to give the audience a bit kf the context it's rooted in?

The problem is going too hard and fast with it, which burns goodwill and gets people irritated. Imagine if Petscop was all to sell something in the end. Now, in the same breath - imagine if Petscop was not selling something, but instead was the preface to a FREE game. That right there is a great way to build community interest and loyalty! "Oh wow they did this entire ARG thing and released a free game to end it / build on it" would go a long ways towards "They're gonna do it again with a paid game, and I want to support that after I saw what content they did for free without funding"

Oney Plays, another Youtube Lets Play channel connected to the Grumps featured a gay couple, Ding Dong and Julian. They were the only actual gay people in the office at the time and after seeing Dream Daddys beta, they pretty vocally voiced their opinions that the game was shallow and just pandering. Suzy and Brian went to Twitter to attack them and tell them they had no idea what they were talking about. The Grump fans harassed them for a bit, and faced with a lot of other challenges DD and Julian just gave up and moved away from LA. Oney denies it and Arin doesn't talk about it at all, but this is likely the reason that Oney Plays hasn't done anything with the Grumps or Supermega since then. In fact Oney has been subtly hostile to the Grumps on Twitter ever since. I know this is just Let's Play drama but it's so hard to see Arin and Suzy as remotely nice/genuine people. Especially with Suzys massively lovely Tweet history.

Yeah every time I happen across a likeable, quality LPer or youtube personality I'm always kind of afraid that I'm going to find out that they're actually a horrible racist/sexist/homophobe/transphobe/etc. I'm almost tempted to never check up on them and leave it a mystery. Let them be Schrödinger's youtube cat, simultaneously both woke and racist until you open the box and collapse the wave function. But yeah I never got into the grumps anyway so I guess I didn't miss too much.

There definitely are people out there who are rabid anti fans and will go to insane lengths to justify their actual hatred of these people. Entire subreddits dedicated to uncovering every bit of unflattering information and to spread wild conspiracies. I think it spawned for the Grumps and not other Lets Play channels because there's a grain or two of truth to it, but it definitely attracts crazies.

Gloomy Rube posted:Some of these are inspiring. Are they low enough resolution to input into an actual NES? I wanna make a spooky NES game. Dunno. I THINK the idea is that clicking the Atari/NES/SNES sliders sets the pixel density and color palette limits to match the system as best as possible. I can make a lot of 90s-era CRPG style graphics with color slider all the way to the left (most color info possible), and the pixelation one or two clicks to the right of the leftmost setting. It likes drawings more than photographs, obviously, and most real photos will often convert to looking like the Gameboy Camera with a wretched upgrade. But some things convert real clean. https://imgur.com/a/rQ1S4wq

Unreal_One posted:Resolution might be doable, or could be with some cropping, but the color palettes I'm pretty sure are impossible. Seems like it does actually match. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_game_console_palettes The problem is that the pixel density was used it much cleaner, more limited and distinct ways than 99% of images actually are. You can NES-fy things pretty well, but it's still way too detailed looking for a majority of what was being designed and played back then. This still easily allows you to bullshit a lost PC game or 'look I found a lost NES game with a build-in graphics chip' which is a real thing.

It might be in the color palette of the console as a whole, but at any given time you can only use 4 in a 8x8 square (when using an advanced graphics chip in the cartridge, natively only every 16x16). Here's the relevant pictures from that link: What it would look like if you could cheat and use the full palette What the NES is natively capable of. It does work very well for faking VGA or SNES, I think. Unreal_One fucked around with this message at 06:54 on Dec 5, 2019 |
