By that logic ESB should have been over even faster. The First Order didn't show up until the resistance was almost done evacuating, the Empire brought tons of star destroyers to Hoth before the rebels had even launched their first ship. "Looks like the Empire is here and has launched fighters, we're completely hosed". But whereas the first order does wind up deploying a ton of tie fighters, the Empire doesn't seem to deploy any until after the Hoth sequence is over. The problem with that scene isnt the constant acceleration (which makes sense) but rather that it's the first time fuel ever gets mentioned IIRC and it sets up a contrived time limit.

The last act of rogue one is honestly great star wars, but they did nothing in the first two thirds to make is as invested in it as we should have been. Also the digital necromancers at Disney should realize its ok just to re-cast people. Surely you can find a gaunt old actor and just have people call him "Tarkin" a couple times to get the point across.

It also seems a lot like the script was just never good, apart from the basic idea of doing a simple civil war story where the rebels tragically eat poo poo. But it does get the look & feel more right than the other Disney movies and that counts for a lot. It has that Doug Chiang production design which really ties it to the original movie in particular.
