When it comes to the Commercial Building it's being affected by The Pale , you can come to that conclusion in the Church quest.

Yeah, especially when they do show up they have real gravitas to them because you don't really expect them and the game initially makes you think stuff like the Phasmid hunt and the bookstore lady crowing about dark energies is a load of crock.

The One True Oden

I really like the way they play it with both the doomed commercial district and the phasmid, where at first it's all jokey playing along, but eventually you learn that the world is more fantastical than it seems. Very similar to the game in general starting of with a cynical tone before slowly revealing that it has a real heart of human compassion at its core.

No Mods No Masters

With some distance I think the game's handling of tone in general is maybe the biggest achievement story wise. Even if the comedic and non-comedic elements had stayed as good as they are individually, it still would have been so easy to botch the way you get pulled between them and they interplay in lesser hands

Lol, all sorts of misreading going on here. I've been turning over an essay in my head about the pale and how it figures into DE's use of existentialism and was worried I was sperging out to someone who had put those pieces together already. Glad you found it useful!

It also just occurred to me that the writer's considering their game modern-punk, in the modernism sense of the word and not the "contemporary" sense of the word is another reason those existentialist themes are baked in so strongly.

Not sure I'm ever gonna write this thing but I'd love the thread's opinion on a title if I do - I've been calling it, in my head, "What Kind of Animal is Harry Du Bois?" Would putting the name of the protagonist in the title constitute too big a spoiler, even if I include a spoiler warning below it? Or would just hearing that name and not even knowing the context cover my rear end?

I support not spoiling anything for first-time players. Not knowing anything about characters and setting is a unique experience in this game, even more than other story-driven games.

Oh geez if I was gonna listen to someone sperging out about something, i'd pick the Pale and DE in general.

For what it's worth I would LOVE to see an essay on this. Not sure how I feel about the title though. I don't think his name would be a massive spoiler or anything, but part of me thinks it doesn't fit too well in the title.

would not put his name on the title, because *personally* I think that is something best avoided for a game like DE, but definitely something with "animal" or "beast" makes for a good one.

this game has a way of killdozering whatever type of character you intended to play pretty quickly, but in a way that is great because it ends up better than what you had in mind

99% of the time it's because your character didn't factor Kim in and within a day or two he becomes someone you cherish and protect so that no blows may land upon him

Lol, this is exactly what happened, I was an rear end in a top hat supercop, but Kim kept giving me disapproving looks and it made me regret "Protagonist's" life choices.

I started out with the intention of being a go-alone paranormal insane person but by the end of day 2 I was that politoon of the troop shielding the child sleeping in the bed from gunshots and knives and poo poo except the troop is Raphael and the child in the bed is Kim dreaming about fast cars. When Kim finally let the mask slip a bit and was like 'gently caress it hell yeah tell me about some cryptids' is when I knew we were kindred spirits

shaving and losing the expression makes you look sad and awful and dead inside

keeping the chops and expression makes you look like a mid-life crisis elemental

keeping the chops but losing the expression is best, you've come to terms with things but you're not throwing away all that you were, you're still human and you're still you

the fogman is for cowards

I'm pretty sure shaving and then keeping the expression automatically uninstalls the game and notifies the authorities
