I got around to rewatching Marley and Marley from Muppet Christmas Carol and picked up on something I hadn't noticed before. In most Jacob Marley performances, he wears the chains but that's about it. They look uncomfortable, but he still moves of his own accord, he's not chained down or anything, more of a fashion statement. However with Waldorf and Stadtler's version, the chains not only grow more numerous, but wrap around them by the end of the song and physically drag them out of the room. I hadn't noticed that the chains were in control, not them.

Also the little humanising moment when they reminisce about evicting the entire orphanage and have a moment of regret after they initially laugh about it. Just a brief shudder, but it's all it needed.

The shudder is my favorite moment from that scene. I legitimately think that Muppet Christmas Carol is one of the best adaptations of that story.

When my friends and I watch the movie during the holidays, though, we skip the "Love Is Gone" song. It's just too much of a downer for us.

That song is Mrs. Doctor's favorite song from the movie. She gets angry that there are different versions of the film that were released that don't have it, including our digital one from Amazon.

Gonna have to go rewatch Marley and Marley now.

As Christmas Carol adaptions go, Richard Williams' animated version is also an underrated adaption like Muppet Christmas Carol.

It's one of the eeriest versions and its visually fantastic.

I think its only been released on VHS, (Which is I how saw it as a kid) but its on YouTube.

I'm going to be the outlier and say that I never appreciated Muppets Christmas Carol when I was younger. I was so used to Mickey's (which has a runtime of like 25 minutes), so the Muppets one felt like it took FOREVER.

I've only seen bits and parts of it since, so I should (and will) definitely give it a proper rewatch. Like I know it's good, and now that I'm not 5 anymore, I don't have as horrible an attention span as I used to, but man... I couldn't stand it when I was little. Length aside, I had seen Mickey's SO many times that I had every line, every sound effect, every musical cue locked into memory. It was just too weird to me to try and watch the same story but with all of that stuff changed around.

Feels like the best Muppet stuff knows that you need to intermix the familiar with the new and the muppets with live-action to get the tone just right.

Seems like it's Christmas Present that's usually an original character in adaptations like that (Mickey's and Muppets anyway) maybe because they're the one who has the most distinct personality and appearance.

Clearly want and ignorance would be muppets too big to actually fit under the cloak as a visual gag, like Sweetums. Or if you want creepy, go for the Vincent Price parody, Uncle Nasty. He was great in the Amy Adams muppet movie.

Ah, THAT'S where he's from. I knew he wasn't just for the movie. Best lines, though.

Also, I just had a writeup about how interesting it was that Disney makes up Scrooge McDuck from Ebenezer Scrooge in Mickey's Christmas Carol, but then I come to find out that he's been around since 1947! (Mickey's Christmas Carol was 1983). Obviously, he was named after the original Ebenezer, so when Disney made MCC, they just used the most obvious character for that, who they had been using for almost 40 years at that point.

To me, that actually becomes more interesting.

Man, this whole time, I just thought it was neat that Scrooge came from an adaptation and then moved into the rest of the Disney universe, but I guess not. Crazy.

Scrooge was pretty obviously named after the Christmas Carol character and used for a more or less similar role, so not too surprising. Is surprising to me that Mickey's Christmas Carol is that new, I thought it was from way back in like, the 40s. Seems like Scrooge was a one-off until writers realised the storytelling potential of Donald having an absurdly rich uncle and it snowballed from there.

The new DuckTales has a funny take on that, with different but clearly intentionally familiar takes on the Ghosts of Christmas and an implication Ebenezer Scrooge exists in-universe as a separate person from Scrooge McDuck. (who never got quite that greedy and misanthropic, though he has some close calls)

Scrooge was popular before even the original Duck Tales cartoon because of the Carl Barks comics pretty much everywhere except the States because DC made sure to bury comics as a mainstream medium over here real well in their drive to get rid of EC Comics.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Life_and_Times_of_Scrooge_McDuck
The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a pretty epic comic.

"The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a serial of 12 comic book stories written and drawn by Don Rosa, lettered by Todd Klein first published by the Danish publisher Egmont in the magazine Anders And & Co. from 1992–94...The stories chronicle the in-universe biography of Scrooge McDuck before his introduction in 1947. The stories were later collected and published together in a single volume. Rosa later published additional stories which expanded on Scrooge's biography."

"The story follows the main events of Scrooge's life between 1877 and 1947, including almost all references found in Carl Barks stories about Scrooge's life until 1947 but leaving some room for Rosa and other creators to add more details later. The comic also provides information on the backgrounds and origins of many characters related to Scrooge."

Also one more thing of note, donald duck is apparently 27 scrooge meets him and the nephews for the first time. This 12 issue run won Rosa an Eisner.

There's something oddly comforting about the Muppet form of Christmas Yet to Come that makes a neat comparison with Present's edge of uneasiness. Present is jolly but also judgemental, while Yet to Come is terrifying and yet comforting. Yet to Come shows Scrooge what he needs to see, but doesn't judge him or condemn him like Present does. The custom muppet designs for Christmas Carol are all really good.

I think my favourite change that Muppet Christmas Carol does compared to other adaptations is with Scrooge in the graveyard. Many portrayals have him act all incredulous and terrified when he discovers his own name on the tombstone. In the Muppets, Scrooge already knows it's his own name and confirming it doesn't scare him, it just drives him fully into despair. It's a subtle change but one I really appreciate because it follows with his growth across the film rather than ramming through his change of heart only after he's spent the night being oblivious to the suffering around him.

EDIT: While looking for a link to refresh my memory on the above paragraph, I found this and wow, I didn't realize that the full song for Marley and Marley was actually filmed and not just on the Album.

I only got around to watching Scrooged about a year ago, but I really liked the performance in that. When he finally opens his heart at the end during the filming of his disastrous clusterfuck of a christmas special, he's nearly delirious with laughter, it really sells his relief. I also like that his reaction to the beggar's death is more anger than anything else, recognising that that guy didn't have to die just because he was being an rear end in a top hat. "YOU IDIOT! WHY DIDN'T YOU GO TO THE SHELTER YOU MORON! SHE WOULD HAVE HELPED YOU!" I also like the twist that his girlfriend won't leave him, worse, she'll become him because of his lovely influence.

The Sabrina cartoon's take on a Christmas Carol was a funny one; the absurdly rich bitch who for some reason goes to a public school doesn't have her mind changed by a magical dream, so they instead just decide to invite her along to a Christmas party so she can actually socialise with people like a normal person.

Crispin Glover is an annoying snob and he had bad experience with the producers and didn't want to do the sequel and sued them for using his likeness in the second movie without permission

but their life is better not only because they have nicer things and a nice car, but because George and Lorraine actually love each other and enjoy spending time with each other and she doesn't feel stuck and she's not an alcoholic anymore and in better shape and she's actually happy that Marty is going out with Jennifer. Everyone's just got a happier attitude. And Biff WAS trying to con George by saying he put on two coats of wax instead of only one, so George was right to chastise him.

George C. Scott's is my favourite version of a Christmas Carol, mostly for his performance; he's really the definitive Scrooge in my mind.
I also really liked Frank Finlay's take on Marley. He really chews the scenery as a tormented spirit, but sells it with complete sincerity.

Yeah, and they were loaded because George now believed in himself enough to follow his dream and became an author. It's a perfectly simple ending and Crisping Lover uses it as an excuse for killing his own career.
