When I was stationed at White Sands in the mid 90s there was a missile test in April that went awry and the authorities waited until mid July to send us off to look for it. We were dropped off near the Trinity site to comb the desert in 100+ degree heat with no support. Well, there's a ton of UXO in that area too, all over the drat place. I gathered my team out of the area and we waited for pick up at the Trinity facility while giving each other IVs to stave off heat stroke while we gathered trinitite. Was also put on a firefighting detail near there at another time in an area that had a lot of ordinance laying about, I think I was more afraid of stuff at White Sands than I ever was in a combat zone because of the experimental nature of the stuff.

When I was deployed our LT wanted to go down a road. Every team leader and squad leader, for the first time ever as a cohesive non rear end kissing unit, spoke up against it and said it was loving dumb to go down a road nobody has ever gone down. Marines came through and cleared the road and found like 100 IEDs.

During the invasion, we ended up in a field of UXO from Desert Nam 1. We stopped, and as far out as I could see, we're UXO. It was the only time we stopped, and I didn't get out to piss. Backing out with an entire convoy was...interesting, but lucky.

Lol picking up bomblets by hand and putting them in a sack must be the single loving stupidest approach to UXO disposal I can imagine, but I'm certainly no expert. I was pretty dumbstruck until the part where dude blew up. Brought me back to reality pretty quick
