Morons on the internet (a.k.a. the internet) complained that casting ScarJo as the lead for Ghost In The Shell was whitewashing, because the character was supposed to be Asian. The creator said that he had no specific nationality in mind when he created her, and being that she's a robot, she could easily be any nationality, so stoping being fuckwads. The internet, of course, continued to be fuckwads, because the internet makes you stupid.

People were/are annoyed at a persistent trend for asian characters to be written out of things or replaced by white actors. There are a ridiculously small number of roles for Asian actors as it is. Then there's a cult anime movie, set in Japan and featuring a Japanese protagonist, getting a live action remake. And yet again they cast a white person in the role and add bits to the story to explain it. It is absolutely whitewashing and complaining about it doesn't make you a moron. Then on top of it all Scarlett Johansson responds with this pissy open letter about how she should be allowed to play "any person, tree or animal" because that's her job or some poo poo.

In the original manga and anime her name is Motoko Kusanagi which is pretty darn Asian and the big twist at the end of the live action film is that ScarJo's character "Mira Killian" discovers that she's really a young Asian woman whose brain was put into a white body and all her memories/culture/identity were erased and replaced with fake implanted memories.

I thought the open letter was after she caught heat for taking the role of a FtM trans person. In the letter she told people that if they have a problem with her taking the role they should take it up with Jeffrey Tambor, Felicity Huffman or Jared Leto. Three people who have played trans characters and, coincidentally, have expressed regret at it and have since pushed for more casting of trans actors. Of course then Jeffrey Tambor sexually assaulted those trans actors, Felicity Huffman bought her children scholarships to "even the playing field for her children" and Jared Leto sent used condoms to his co stars and slept with underage groupies. So, really, gently caress all this poo poo.

The problem here as always is that it was mostly white dorks on the net complaining The creator of the character didn't mind ScarJo. A guy walked around Japan asking people what they thought about ScarJo in the role and they were stoked a big hollywood name would play the character.
